Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Tell the Truth Tuesday

My pal, Alison, (Bonnie Lassie) encourages us to show the less than beautiful parts of our gardens on Tuesdays.  At this time of year, I can point the camera in just about any direction and find perfect shots that would fit the bill.  Although sidewalk maintenance is the responsibility of homeowners, the folks at the city are installing yellow rubbery bumpy thingies on the sidewalk ramps on the corner of our house.   They've decided to replace a bit more as well for some reason have decided to pull out quite a bit more of the sidewalk as well.  They also repaired a crumbling curb out front.  I've been really impressed with how little they disturbed the plants when fixing the curb.  Out on the corner, current conditions are perfect for Tell the Truth Tuesday.

Because I knew what was coming, I pulled lots of plants out of the corner bed  that previously looked like this:

Perhaps the remaining Acaena purpurea left in the bed will survive having extra soil piled on top of it.

Also to their credit, the crew put the net up around the back of Pinus contorta 'Chief Joseph,' a birthday gift from my sister and niece several years ago.  On the bright side, this will hopefully be over in the next month or two and I can replant the removed plants that are sitting all over the back walkway.
Happy new year all!

  1. Happy New Year to you too Peter. It sounds as though the city workers are being considerate with your plants. I know you will have your sidewalk area looking great after they finish.

  2. I remember well how you posted about this difficult sidewalk corner. It really had come a long way, just in time for you to pull it all up. Shucks. Once the city is done though, it will be great fun re- planting, just in time for sprint.

  3. After the horror that was our street work this last summer (actually sewer work, but since the sewer is under the street...) this post is stressing me out! I hope it has a happy ending...

  5. I hope that corner area can be returned to its former glory when the city's work is done. I'm glad they spared the beautiful - should I say handsome - 'Chief Joseph'. Happy new year, Peter!

  6. That is quite the mess. I am glad you had a heads up before they started. It is nice that they seem to be respecting your remaining plantings. I hope this holds. Happy New Year!

  7. Oh dear, this is somewhat familiar. We had utility flags, ropes, etc., all over the backyard all summer, and then they reinstalled them during the fall--apparently additional work was required. Fortunately, it's along the edges of the property, but I'll have to join in the meme to share what could have been a damaging situation. I do hope your workers finish soon and you won't have permanent damage. Happy New Year!

  8. Happy New Year Peter ! I have to confess I have no idea what purpose the yellow bumpy-thingys are supposed to serve. I have a special route at the grocery store when I wheel the cart out to my car specifically to avoid the bumps..what if the vibration breaks my wine bottles ?

  10. Such a shame having your garden messed up specially as you have so much winter interest here. I particularly love the pine.I'm going to look out for that for my winter garden.

  11. That's quite a bit of work and seems to have been going for a while. At least you and the pretty gold pine are taking it well so far.

    Happy New Year!

  12. It's such a shame given how nice this area looked before. I hope they finish soon.

  13. Nice that they are being so respectful of your garden. I always dread the little colored flags that herald street or sidewalk work.
