Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

In A Vase On Monday Fortunately/Unfortunately

Fortunately, we had the most beautiful weather so far this year on Friday (65 degrees and sunny.) Fortunately, I took the day off work.  Unfortunately, I took the day off work because the flu bug visited my house.

This meany left me with barely enough energy to hoist the remote control as the dogs and I lay on the couch, drifting in and out of sleep all day.

Fortunately, there are lots of blooms in the garden to put in a vase.  Unfortunately, rain poured down most of the day and I considered taking pictures of a silk arrangement already in place instead.

This Rhododendron 'President Roosavelt' had bent down to the ground very near my back door and looked as beat as I felt.  (This variety is gorgeous with variegated foliage and bi colored blooms but are also known for leaning and being a bit weak.)

One quick dash outside was about it for me.  The rhododendron was placed in an Helium mug, a gift of my niece.

If you don't know Strindberg and Helium, here are some uplifting videos:

The flu bug and rhododendron were joined by facial tissue, sleepytime tea, and a thermometer.  Not the most flower-filled Monday Vase  but certainly the fastest to assemble.  Didn't want to miss out on the addictive In A Vase On Monday meme hosted by the talented and creative  Cathy at Rambling in the Garden. Click here to see her arrangement this week and to find links to those of other participants.

Can you believe it's already the last week of April?  My poor garden has been sorely neglected this year and I've agreed to open it in a couple of months for the Northwest Perennial Alliance.  Hope they like the drifts of dandelions and masses of shotweed.

  1. Last year I was sick for much of May and remember taking a photo of cough syrup, tissues and a bouquet. I guess this is the season for spring sickness of many kinds. Hope you feel better soon.

  2. Oh, Peter I'm so sorry you're ill. What the flu bug! This rhododendron is lovely, but you have to take care, to be in a bed, wish you're better soon.

    1. Thank you Nadezda. I'm lucky that I was able to take time off work to recover. The doctor diagnosed an ear and nasal infection and with medication, I'm feeling much better.

  3. Oh, how crappy it is to feel so crappy on the best day of the year so far, and to be so behind in the garden. I know the feeling, that was me for most of last year. Now I'm spending every waking moment trying to get a handle on things. Hope you feel better soon, let me know if there's anything I can do to help, I'm only 30 minutes away. Thank you so much for the laugh from the Helium cartoons, they were hilarious. I've never heard of them before, but they are right up my alley.

    1. I remember worrying about you last year and am glad that your health issues seem under control and you're able to enjoy your garden again. Thank you for your kind offer of help. You know my garden, it's always a jungle. The benefit of overcrowding is that it hides a multitude of sins. Glad you like Strindberg and Helium, they're favorites of mine.

  4. It's not at all fair that the flu bug got you just as your weather starts to turn! I hope you snap back quickly - I'm sure that the dogs, the flower, tea, and sleep offer comfort in the interim. The Strindberg-Helium cartoons, new to me, are hilarious so thanks for the introduction.

    1. Would have been at work most of the day anyway. The warmth really made things a lot greener. Just went out to see today. Thanks, feeling better already.

  6. Gosh, get well soon, Peter. What a time to be laid low (well, actually there never is a good time to be laid low, but spring esp. so). I like your props - expresses just what's up with you!

  7. I'm so sorry that you have not been well, feel better soon. I think you did an admiral job capturing a vase on Monday in your condition…very clever. BTW, drifts of dandelions can be very pretty. :D

  8. Despite your affliction you jave produced a vase and post in your usual inimitable style Peter, and given us a smile from those odd cartoons. I love the props you have included - as always you tell it like it is. Thanks Peter, and hope you feel better soon and can enjoy your garden again

  9. I hope you're on the mend, Peter! I was all set for a fabulous day in the garden yesterday: a cool front had blown through my corner of Katy, Texas and the weather was absolutely perfect. My husband's appendix interfered. He is resting comfortably and I'm still mourning the time I lost!

  10. I had a hunch you were on a sick day when I saw your responses during the day on Friday. Bummer.
We are at the Whidbey cabin this evening, after a glorious day in the Skagit valley with the tulips. There will be blog posts later this week, after I get back home.

  12. It's such a waste of time being ill in spring but you retain your sense of humour. Your rhododendron has wonderful colouring and I'm sure it has cheered you up.

    1. It was a bit of a waste. On the other hand perhaps my body just needed a rest. The rhododendron is a perfect pick-me-up.
