Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

In A Vase on Monday

In a Vase on Monday has been hosted for three years by Cathy at Rambling in the Garden.  Click here to see her vase today and find links to those of other participants.

This vase came many years ago from a seconds/garage sale of a glass blowing artist friend.  Looks suitably autumnal in color so it became the vessel for today's arrangement, if you can call it that.

It's rose hip and cotoneaster berry time.

Throw in some ornamental grass blooms

and some Physocarpus ('Coppertina' or 'Summer Wine' I forgot which)  foliage.

A few other things made it into this lopsided arrangement.

Here it is inside joined by a Chinese covered jar and a cloisonne vase found at a thrift store for a dollar.

Happy new week!

  1. Nice find, Peter, and lovely arrangement. I love all the treasures of fall. I have a few seed heads, but wish I had more berries.

  2. Dare I say it, it looks almost Christmasy!

  3. I am confused. The vase in the bottom picture looks blue and gray to me, while the one above (outside) looks greenish and brown. Same one? How do the colors change like that? Very nice autumnal display of plants, berries, etc.

    1. It's the magic of the glass color and play of light.

  5. I wish I had your talent at flower arranging. Alas, I will have to live vicariously through your blog, admiring from afar. I still have two roses stuck in a vase on my kitchen sink from July...I feel I'm channeling Miss Havisham with my faded, dilapidated roses. (There's no cake sitting around mouldering, though. Cake doesn't get stale here.)

    1. Before this meme, I never cut anything from the garden to bring inside, now it's fun to be challenged to find something to throw in a vase.

  6. It's a suitably autumnal arrangement and left me wondering why I didn't have the presence of mind to use some berries myself this week. Your friend's vase is magnificent.

  7. This is a great autumnal vase to pop all your autumnal bits and bobs in - so effective, Peter

  9. Great vase and one that looks quite different depending on the lighting. Love the drama of all those berries.

  10. I love the arrangement and the vase!
I guess it will be In a Vase On Tuesday here. My kitchen table arrangement is sagging. I'm sure berries will be part of the new one too.

  13. Your cupboards must be tour-worthy. You keep pulling out treasure after treasure. That vase is magnificent (and what you put in it ain't half bad either).

    1. There are treasures in the crannies of this old house. I've also dragged home stuff from thrift stores to use for the meme and then donate back. It's a fun way to use lots of things but not have to store them.

  14. It's beautiful! I love the changing colors of the glass vase and (for my eye at least) the changing size. It went from small, to medium, to large -- as you moved it around and filled with garden bits. Like magic!

  15. Peter, lovely bouquet and I also liked this vase from a thrift store. Good idea to combine them together.

  16. Oh, that vase is really gorgeous all on its own. I always enjoy your displays near the staircase in that little alcove, and this one is extra special.
