Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Wednesday Vignette - House Plant Sale Time

January is the month during which many nurseries in this area offer discounts on houseplants. After all of the holiday decorations are put away people find that there's space that can be filled in with potted plants. This young shopper was spotted at Watson's recently.  It always makes me happy to see little ones enjoying plants.  It gives me hope for the future of gardening and the enjoyment/appreciation of the natural world to see something other than a cell phone in a child's hands.
Wednesday vignette is hosted by the wonderful Anna at Flutter and Hum.  Click here to join the party.

  1. I always get a warm feeling in my heart too, when I see kids shopping for plants... Through the connections of our friend Loree, I'm going to take part in a middle school career fair next week, and talk about what I do. I'm kind of excited about it, actually, and hope I can make at least a few kids interested. To be able to grow, and keep something alive is such a positive, life enforcing feeling. My husband always laughs at me when I state my opinion that everyone should learn to grow things because it's so beneficial to our mental health. "You realize I get the same exact satisfaction from playing music", he says, and I immediately feel the shame of making sweeping generalizations. But really, whatever it is, we all need to have SOMETHING that makes us feel that way.

  3. I thought for a moment that you were sharing an old photo of yourself! Were you drawn to plants at that age?

    1. Some of my earliest memories involve plants. Planting pumpkins with my father, my mom picking flowers and her rock garden, bright yellow daffodils blooming and wild strawberries gathered from our Vermont farm (before we moved to AK when I was six) are some of my earliest and happiest memories. I've always been drawn to plants. You were "Late to the Garden Party" yes?

    1. He was a total stranger but the coat, shoes, and plant in his hand were just so adorable. I asked permission of his parents.

  6. He gives one hope for the future on every level with that curious, intent expression. Looks like some parents have been spending quality time with this young man.

    1. Both his mom and dad were there with him. Such a sweet family that I wanted to hug them all. (His parents were young enough to be my own children.)

  8. Oh, I agree, Peter. I have tried to pass on my love of plants to my grand kids. I think it has sort of worked with Irene.

    1. I'll always remember Irene's flower shop even though she's grown out of it.

  9. What a handsome gardener in your picture. I just set out one of my house plants. It got some yellow spots on the underside of the leaves. I don't know what it is but I don't want it on anything else so I is a gonner.
