Something old, something new. The ornamental cabbage from fall is getting tall as it prepares to bolt as the hellebores begin to bloom.
Lonicera fragrantissima lives up to it's name as it pours forth lemony sweet fragrance.
Something borrowed- We're all living on borrowed time, right? A metronome audibly ticks away along with a pocked watch that had belonged to my father. The sparkly glass jewels remind us that time is precious.
Something blue: The vase looks a bit like an older Fenton piece. The frilly edged top is obscured by the contents. In reality, it's a really cheap vase I found at a discount store a few years ago. (Don't know where I was going with the something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue but realized it fit today's offering.
Oh yes, the dangly star of the arrangement is Garrya that had to be cut so it didn't dangle in the faces of passersby.

Oh that Garrya! I keep looking for one hardy to Zone 5. Don't think it is going to happen. Love how much that cabbage looks like a blowsy flower.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny how themes sometimes just choose themselves, Peter? :)Your vase and props are, as always, delightfully thrown together so thanks for sharing them
ReplyDeleteOh my that is quite a vase making a huge statement especially with that cabbage front and center! Wonderful to have some outside blooms for a vase...here it is still winter so indoor blooms only!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful mix, Peter! The Garrya is so dramatic and and ornamental cabbage makes a spectacular faux flower.
ReplyDeleteIt is so not important that the frilly edged of the vase is obscured, the Garrya adds all the frill and thrill today. I like the time ticking allegory; it all came together splendidly.
ReplyDeleteI don't recall ever seeing Garrya in a vase, what a shame as it looks fantastic. Oh and what? 50 days of winter left? NO! I'm thinking next Wednesday, Feb 7th when the NWFGF kicks off that means winter is officially OVER!
ReplyDeleteI'm in total agreement especially since there is one tetrapanax close to the house that still looks like it's trying to bloom.
DeleteOMG, that Garrya! I wonder if either of mine will ever drip with long tangles of flowers like that. It's magnificent. The whole composition is great. I've been thinking I should maybe start putting a vase or two together, even though I don't have anything growing in the cutting garden yet. Actually, I just wanted an excuse to bring some sweetbox into the house.
ReplyDeleteThat cabbage is a star with it's wonderful markings and beautiful colouring. Now I think I need a Garrya ...
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely cheerful post Peter! That really made me smile. Love the use of the ornamental cabbage, and the Garrya is quite striking. :)
ReplyDeleteLove this week's arrangement, Peter. Awesome vase with a vintage feel, love the dangly Garrya and the cabbage adds a nice pop!
ReplyDeleteI like the theme! The Garrya, Hellebores, Ornamental Cabbage, and the vase make for a sweet display. Thank you for the note about only 50 more days--that helps the sting of knowing that we still have February to endure. ;-)
ReplyDelete"Old Cabbage" looks happy to be in a new setting. No hellebores in bloom here yet, but we do have buds up out of the ground.
ReplyDeleteI guess I'll have to remember to refer to that big show next week as a "fest" now. NWFGF!
I love Garrya such a wonderful shrub, and it is doing a graceful wingman act...A very attractive arrangement.
ReplyDeleteWho would have thought that a cabbage would add so much glamour and drama? Love it. You clearly have Garrya 'James Roof', he has the longest tassels of all. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteDon't know how I describe your arrangement. Thinking wedding then dad and the lace and gems remind me of my great aunts born in the late 1880's. The feeling of times gone by is kinda sad. Liking the garrya and even that reminds me of cobwebs which is part of something old. Think I'm rambling now.
ReplyDeleteI love the droopy dangles. They are so cheerful especially with the cabbage rose smiling.
ReplyDeleteA perfect wedding of disparate parts, so there's where your theme comes in.
