Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Sandy's New Fence

You may recall reading  about my friend and neighbor, Sandy here, here, here. and here.  She's the one who gave me all of her outdoor pots last summer.  Somehow they all got filled.  Anyway, a couple of days ago, she told me that she and her next-door neighbor had been collecting doors to make a fence.  Yesterday, she called to say that it was up so I walked over for show and tell.

Sandy's front garden is in bright sun.

The back is in deep shade.

I was a bit dubious when I first heard about this idea but I absolutely love the fence.  Because it's so long, it's impossible to get it all in one picture.

Can you tell that Sandy's favorite color is green?

Somehow one door stayed red.
I hope your weekend is full of surprises as happy as Sandy's new fence.    Tomorrow is my open garden so I know I'll have fun.

  1. That is a fun idea. I wonder how the doors are being held together and how long it took to collect so many of them, and all different from one another.
I hope you have a wonderful open garden tomorrow. Good thing it's not on Sunday, as it's going to be a hot one.

    1. I think they used the existing fence posts and 2 x 4 top and bottom cross members and screwed them to the doors. (maybe they're new, I didn't go through the gate into the neighbor's yard) It appears that the construction is much the same as for any wood fence. On some of the doors with windows (not the one that's a gate) you could see the top cross member through the clear glass.

  2. I love Sandy's new fence! It's marvelous. There are some really lovely finds in there. Green is a good color.

  3. is your open garden 'open' to all? I am so curious about it - especially as I live in N. Tacoma and I am always trying to figure out where your garden is ;)

    1. Hi Kate, It's open for the Northwest Perennial Association but you're more than welcome to come. If you drop me an email, I'll be happy to send you my address. (Look at the box that says "About Me" to the right of the first picture in this post, Click on "View My Complete Profile." Under "Contact Me," there's an email option. Click there.) If that doesn't work for some reason, let me know.

  4. So many questions I have! (about construction) But I'll just say "wow"...I love it when someone has a vision and goes for it.

    1. Looks similar to regular wood fence construction except with doors used instead of wood fence panels.

  6. Sounds crazy but looks great. Very clever and I can’t believe you haven’t already started collecting doors.

  7. I was going to ask Kris's question. I guess you have to know which one is the gate. I love the fence but I can't tell how it is all put together. Oh, I just checked more comments and now I know.
    See you tomorrow!

  8. I have never seen such a long fence. Wow, if you needed privacy this is sure a good way to get it. What a neat collection! I love it. Like you I couldn't imagine what it would look like but I like it.

  9. That is awesome looking, how unique! And how nice that two neighbors can agree on that kind of fence. Good luck with your open garden - I wish I lived close enough to come visit!

  10. What a clever idea. Sandy and her neighbor certainly did come up with a unique fence. It will be interesting to see how it holds up to the weather.

  11. A very fun fence. I have friends that have a fence like this on one side of their garden. I like the way these ones are painted!

  12. What an interesting idea (and very green both in color and ecologically ;) ). How was it put together/supported?
Hope your open garden well today!

  13. Reminds me of all the doors in the Pixar movie "Monsters, Inc." That is a very cool fence, though even better if it had been a fence with the doors set into it, so the viewer would have to try all the doors to see which one opened.

Your neighbor has a beautiful garden, as well.

Lucky people to be able to see your garden!

  14. Oh my goodness! I adore this fence. It makes me want to bust our the 4-5 doors we have in storage (it's a long story) and make a random fence somewhere in my garden. Sandy's garden is great too! Thanks for sharing.
