Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Judi Hook's Magical Garden Part One

Nearly a year ago, a woman came into Mandarin Stained Glass and asked to have some glass fused for some yard art she had designed.  She showed us some pictures of her previous designs and I was instantly captivated by her amazing creativity!  A few days ago, following the completion of her final work, Judi invited  us out to see her garden and her art. There are too many treasures here for one post!

Judi's talent lies not only in designing these gorgeous pieces but also in their placement

I love her alliums which are a a little over a foot in diameter.

Remember that yucca/allium combination from Melissa's Garden?  Here it is again in a slightly different form.

This lovely garden is next to Judi's horse stable in a peaceful, rural setting in the Spanaway, WA area.

Judi's designs are unlike any others I've seen!  She says that she's done with this now having designed what she wanted for her own space.  The metal work and assembly was done by Joe at Pioneer Iron Works in Tacoma, whose own gorgeous work will be the subject of a future post!   Collaborating with Judi and Joe has been an amazing experience!

Judi's wish is that anyone who would like to make her designs for themselves or to sell would feel free to do so.  She would be happy to give you her sketches and templates as she has no interest in having any more made for herself.  If you would like to contact her let me know and I will  send you the information.
There are so many gorgeous pieces that it's hard to choose a favorite!

Some of the pieces, like this windmill, are kinetic.

We're at the end of part one and haven't arrived at the pieces that include the aforementioned fused glass. Stay tuned for more!

  1. What an incredibly talented artist! I am so jealous of you, getting to visit her garden. I wish she were willing to make art to sell, I would definitely be a customer. Looking forward to Part Two!

    1. Her art, garden, and setting are all way cool & I wouldn't mind trading my place in town for her place in the country! Well, except that the soil there is really rocky.

  2. Love this! The art and the setting are just wonderful. Alliums are difficult to grow here so I might try to copy these pieces if Melissa's combination in the container doesn't work.
