Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

In a Vase on Monday

Autumn is making itself known in warm colors, cold nights, bejeweled spider webs, and the ripening of all sorts of squash. Fields of magical orange orbs dot the countryside as stacks of pumpkins crowd entrances of grocery stores.   Summers were too short to grow pumpkins in my small town Alaska home and our one grocery store would get a few each year so this abundance still thrills me even though I've experienced it for more than thirty years now.

We visited a pumpkin patch to get a variety of squash/pumpkins for my kids to compare, carve, taste during the month while at home, I decided to use the glass pumpkin collection as part of today's vase, the contents of which are hydrangeas and grass blooms.

An  IAVOM arrangement from a month ago was still hanging around so it got thrown in as well.

Glass pumpkins seem to be a thing these days.  Mine have trickled in over the years from various discount sales.

The container itself is actually a metal candle holder with cut out tree silhouettes.  Later the flowers will be replaced with a lit candle and the branch designs will dance around the room as the flame flickers.

In A Vase on Monday is hosted each week by the amazing Cathy at Rambling in the Garden.  Click here to join in the fun!
I hope you're enjoying the beauty of autumn!

  1. Love the view in the second from last photo. I need to get my fall decor out but it is still very summery here.

  6. I'm very impressed by your glass pumpkin collection, Peter. I visited a display at my local botanic garden this past weekend but the prices made me shudder in a way that few other Halloween displays have managed to do. I need to visit some of those discount sales up your way!

  8. Your dried hydrangeas are beautifully coloured. I've never seed a glass pumpkin perhaps they haven't made it over here yet.

  9. Your pumpkin collection is fun! Warms up October, doesn't it?

The subtle range colors of those dried Hydrangea flowers is something else again. Wonderful.

  11. I love the stacks of pumpkins at the stores too. There's just something so cheerful and autumnal about those bright orange orbs.
We spent much of the day outside, first walking and then working in the yard. Beds are getting cleaned out, dahlias are dug, and we're getting ready for bulb planting.

  13. I was introduced to the glass pumpkin thing by a visit to the Corning Museum of Glass in New York State. They have an enormous gift shop. If you're ever on this side of the continent, you should go see – if you haven't already. At this time of year, I love arrangements that don't need water, and last and last and last.
