Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

In a Vase on Monday - The Eyes Have It!

A playful raccoon decided to knock one of the eyes off of the Dr. Seuss tree (What I call most topiary.)  One of these days, I'll get the ladder out and put it back up but for Halloween, a cyclops is just fine.  Clever raccoon was trying to remind me of a cyclops tumbler that I'd found at last spring's Glass Eye sidewalk sale.

Don't be frightened, the vase won't harm you.

Also just right for the season is this glass face container found at the same sale.  It's holding Senecio viravira along with some pokeweed and cotoneaster berries.

Cyclops is holding Miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus', opened seed pods of Iris foetidissima and unopened pods of Paulownia tomentosa along with some pokeweed berries from last week's vase.  These two looked a little lonely.

So some Jack-o-lantern friends joined the party.

In a Vase on Monday is hosted by Cathy at Rambling in the Garden.  Be sure to visit her blog to see what others have scared up to put in a vase today.

  1. What a vase collection you have! Even with all that drama, I sometimes find it hard to concentrate on your arrangement with all that gorgeous old woodwork in the background.

  2. I couldn't wait to see what you might have for a vase for Halloween...and this is just fabulous...all the pumpkin faces adorning that amazing cyclops vase....perfect against that stunning old woodwork.

  3. Oh, that's wonderful!

Also very diplomatic of you to refer to raccoons as "playful" rather than as "#^@$#+!^".

  6. Excellent! And how nice of the raccoons to remind you of that cyclops vase. I wonder what they're trying to remind me of? To invest in an electric fence? Take some sharp shooting lessons?

  7. Now, I am not sure if you are teasing, Peter, when you talk of a 'Glass Eye sidewalk sale' - I certainly wouldn't be selling any off any glass eye vases if I had the collection you have. That green one in particular is stunning and a great choice for the season - thanks for sharing

  8. Those are both great containers, and fab, oh-so-colorful arrangements. Some day I am going to remember to plant some Iris foetidissima.

  9. This post left me wondering once again where the heck you keep all your collectibles! Is it magic? Do you have a cabinet somewhere akin to Mary Poppins' bag?

    1. Well, lots of stuff lives in plastic totes in the basement or attic and rotates through depending on the season and our old house has lots of space. If we ever downsize, we'd have one heck of a moving sale.

  13. Well we can rely on you to come up with something spooky for Halloween. I'm not sure what to make of the eye glass. A bit creepy. Lovely arrangement.
