Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

The Tacoma Home and Garden Show - Vintage Market

One person's junk is another person's treasure.  It's always been fun for me to see other people's collections of stuff and hear the stories attached to items.  Vintage markets are a way to see quite a volume of stuff in one place and at my age, many of the items, now considered vintage or antiques, are simply objects that were once commonplace in my life.   There are also sometimes great finds for the garden.

Display after display of things that were fairly common housewares just a few decades ago.

Everything that we've created, our homes, our possessions, everything is eventually garbage.  Might as well enjoy a bit of the garbage on our journey through the compost heap that is the cycle of life, right?
Why didn't these chairs come home with me?   Probably because I seldom sit in the chairs we have in the garden already.

Serious lust for this fancy rattan peacock  chair.  The far simpler example that lives on my back porch came from a thrift store for one tenth of the price of this beauty

Sequin fruit.  Hmmm.

The birdcage has serious possibilities as does the octagonal window sash.

I was surprised to see not one but two chimney pots.  The Urban Gardener (Design, Cultivate, Antiques)  always surprises with their unusual  and wonderful finds.  I've wanted a chimney pot for many years but usually found them a bit pricey.  These were quite reasonable and the one pictured came home with me.

There was a pen nearby and somehow the altar tag was altered.

There didn't seem to be as many vendors this year as there were last  but the quality  of offerings and clever displays more than made up for that!

Happy weekend all.

    1. It's possible that the Urban Gardener still has the other chimney pot. Might be worth calling to find out. They are not far from me so I could pick it up for you or you could come to town and we could do lunch or hit a nursery.

  2. Love that wicker chair; what a beauty. We sold our chimney pot to friends. I think they look like giant chess pieces. I am suddenly into sequin fruit. Put some old sequined berries on my Christmas tree this year.

    1. Thanks. I haven't decided about placement. It's now living inside the house Until I lug it out and move it around a bit.

  4. Good plan to buy the chimney pot! We have two which look very similar, given to us by friends. Sadly they both got damaged on the journey to our house, at the very last corner before they reached us !
Some interesting stuff on display - it opens up lots of possibilities !

    1. So sorry for your chimney pot damage! Hopefully they can be repaired or they can be placed so that the damage doesn't show.

    1. Thanks. I love looking at stuff like this but am not particularly good at displaying it well.

  6. Those chairs ARE great (I think it's the color)...
And I would love to stumble on a set of old school lockers at a VERY affordable price....

  7. "Love and Junk" would be better described as "Love OF Junk", at least as far as I'm concerned. Not just any one can survive a large nick-neck display; I get lost in the relics of times gone by and can spent way too much time browsing... 2.5 weeks to the NWFG show!

    1. Isn't it grand to browse through junque? It's like rummaging through someone else's attic. I can't believe that the show is so close and am really looking forward to it!

  8. I'd love to have those old school-style lockers for garden storage! The sequined fruit looks like the Christmas ornaments my husband and I made for the first Christmas we spent together (before he became a complete humbug).

    1. They would be very stylish for garden storage! Funny how time scroogifies us.

  9. A whimsical post! I keep thinking I need to go through my old stuff and add some of it to the garden. But I never seem to get around to it. Maybe this will be my year of "creative recycling." Thanks for the inspiration!

  10. Peter, going to antique stores I too am often startled to see 'vintage' glassware offered for sale which I'm still using in my kitchen. I guess that makes me an antique, too. I have an old lawn chair sitting in the garden like those in your post which we call the 'Naughty Chair'; the chair I am banished to whenever I have another idea for garden expansion. (Actually no one has sat on it for a long time as it is rusting out and because I no longer have any more bright ideas.) The chimney pot looks amazing, great find! Thank you for always brightening my day, Peter.
