Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Where Are They Now? Winter Digs.

Back in the time known as B.G. (Before Greenhouse) the tender plants were stored in three areas of our house, dormant brugmansias & musas in the basement, other plants in an unfinished room upstairs or in the stained glass "greenhouse" which was part of the back porch.  Now in A.G. time, that space has mysteriously filled up and those areas are now back in service although not as crowded as they once were.

I can throw a space heater in here if it gets really cold.

Experimenting this winter,  I've also put some plants that are hardy to cold but not wet, in available space under the roof of the side porch.

A few bromeliads have been brought into the house for the winter but most will spend the cold months in the greenhouse.

Look, there's still space on that chair for a couple of abutilons.

The green cart gets pulled out and will hold a couple of brugmansias.  I've taken cuttings of several large plants which will stay outside this year.
All that remains to come in is the large Ensete ventricosum, the aforementioned brugmansias and abutilons, tuberous begonias (basement bound) and, only for the coldest part of the winter, a couple of cordylines.  Maybe it's time to stop living so much in zonal denial.  On the other hand, being able to walk through one's home without being thwacked in the face by some plant or other is overrated, don't you think?

  1. Ha! The space in the house "has mysteriously filled up"? Not really that big of a surprise, is it? I love your greenhouse and your plant collection; it seems to gets thornier as the years goes by.

    1. Oh my, yes. I just don't know how all those plants got here:)

  2. I don't think I ever realized before that the stained glass windows were part of your back porch! Cleaning out the greenhouse in preparation for moving stuff inside is one of today's chores. Nigel will help me move them this weekend when he gets back from a business trip. How low have your temperatures gone? We got a night-time low on Tuesday of 36, that was a surprise.

  3. Plants back in the house eh? Someone needs a larger greenhouse!

I thought I could get away with holding off on the Bromeliad movement for awhile, but damn it's getting cool out there.

    1. I think fewer plants might be a better solution. Yes, it's getting chilly at night- the furnace kicked on for the first time the other night. Yikes!

  4. The fact that you have a nursery cart AT YOUR HOUSE says it all!

    1. Ha! That nursery cart actually belongs to someone who stored stuff in our garage 15 years ago and then moved out of state. I should probably get rid of it but it's a handy plant holder.

  5. I've been living in a fool's paradise but can feel the temperatures dropping so I guess this weekend will be it. Your plant areas all look nicely composed.

    1. Yes, it's definitely feeling cold outside these days. Happy migration. Things just get thrown where ever there's a space.

  6. You must have run yourself ragged going in and out of the house with plants. So glad I cut back on mine. ;)

    1. It was a full day of plant moving. I should learn from your example and cut back on the tender plants!

  7. The winter greenhouse would make an amazing event space -- for standing room, everybody would have to hold onto a couple or three plants, of course ;)

    1. What a great idea - New year's eve masquerade party. Come as your favorite plant - extra foliage provided.

  9. You can't put plants onto the blue chair Peter, that's for you to sit on!

  10. I laughed at your masquerade party idea. Extra plants indeed. What a collection. It looks even more impressive in its winter quarters. My paltry six plants to bring in are a yawn compared to this. I must show my husband your collection so he can be thankful. ;)

  11. Maybe you should consider getting them a nice condo in Arizona.

  12. I'm not ready to haul things in this year, though the only things I hauled in last year were the canna/calla bulbs and a slew of geraniums. Maybe this year I'll just take cuttings of the geraniums instead of the entire crop and call it good enough. You're amazing!
