Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Wednesday Vignette - Resignation

As temperatures and rain fall, the sky remaining cloudy and dim for days at a time, we're finally resigned to the idea that summer has, indeed, taken flight to be reborn in the spring of another hemisphere.   I'm reminded of one of my favorite American folk hymn tunes, "Resignation."

The tune is most often used with the words of a paraphrase of the 23rd Psalm and ends with these words:

"There would I find a settled rest
(While others go and come,)
No more a stranger or a guest,
But like a child at home."

There is beauty in this season of change.  A time to put to sleep the failures of the past, rest, and plan for future growth and strength.  As we gather in, light candles, and get out blankets to snuggle beneath on these cold nights, I wish you all the feeling of being  a child at home. May you find beauty in the wet garden and enjoy the sparkling jewels of precious water which we are very lucky to have in this region!

A little something about water, written by Anders Edenroth and performed by The Real Group.

"A poetic, political and philosophical perspective on this transparent matter essential to the survival of every living creature. Some of us take it for granted, others perish from the lack of it."

  1. I love your endless supply of musical analogies to illustrate your sentiments! The melancholy of the first piece is perfect for today's overcast skies. The setting for the second one made me a little homesick - it looks just like the archipelago of western Sweden with those polished rock croppings surrounded by the water. Just perfect! Happy Fall, Peter - complete with hot cider and warm blankets!

    1. Because the Real Group is Swedish, that probably is the archipalego of western Sweden.

  2. I'm still working (albeit slowly and without as much energy) on the garden, but any changes I'm making now won't really have an effect until next year, so effectively I'm implementing plans for next year's garden. We are very lucky to live in a region of the world where we don't have to walk for miles and miles with buckets to pick up fresh, clean water every day.

  3. Water, my new favorite song! Maybe if I play it every day, Mother Nature will be enticed to drop some on us here. I won't try singing it myself as that would undoubtedly send her running in the opposite direction.

  4. Because we blog with Kris and others with little rain, I'm equally grateful for whatever water we receive (even if it feels like TOO much). More rain and wind tomorrow which will pull down even more leaves. I'll miss them when they are gone. (sigh)

  6. It is very satisfying to see summer brown lawns and fields becoming green again. Water brings new life, even as cold weather will bring a shutting down of our lushness. All is good.
We began stowing yard furniture and yard art in the shed today. The patio is stripped down to winter mode.

  7. ugh. the dark clouds of winter were settling in this week (both metaphorically and literally). I just can't embrace the relentless grey of a PNW winter (and i grew up here). Thankfully today was GLORIOUS! And Mclendon's is half pricing a ton of their stock. I have high hopes for a couple of centennial spirit crepe myrtle i picked up.....

  9. What a beautiful tune Rendition is. I love violin and piano together. Something about it speaks to me, heart and soul.

    Water is precious!

Thanks again Peter, for another wonderful, thoughtful post.
