I sometimes forget how lucky I am not to have deer in my garden on a regular basis.

Wednesday Vignette: Checkmate
While walking with Camille in a well-coiffed neighborhood, I noticed this interesting pruning job. Interesting. Camille, when first seeing these throughout the neighborhood, thought that they looked like chess pieces. Why would so many people do this? The answer is that people don't; deer do. Interesting effect.

Deer add a whole new dimension to gardening. Interesting how consistent the pruning is, their work usually is more random.
ReplyDeleteSo glad I don't have to deal with deer in my garden (insert bear joke here).
ReplyDeleteI saw deer in my neighbor's front yard just last night when I left to pick Nigel up at the train station. I've seen them occasionally at the side of Route 410, but never on my own street, until now. Keeping my fingers crossed they don't find anything palatable in my own front garden.
ReplyDeleteNot a bad effect actually. Funny that it's universal in the neighborhood. :)
ReplyDeleteWho knew deer could sub as landscapers?! I'm surprised their work is so neat and consistent.
ReplyDeleteInteresting; back in the Michigan suburbs where I used to garden conifers seemed to be among the few woody plants the deer would not eat.
ReplyDeleteI have seen this pruning style too, and I am also grateful that we don't have deer grazing in our garden. The raccoons are bad enough.
ReplyDeleteWe sometimes see them on the field next to us and once on the front drive. Thankfully they didn't stop to do any pruning!
ReplyDeleteGiant morel mushrooms but still green and not quite ripe . . .
ReplyDeleteBut those deer have an artistic streak, no?
ReplyDeleteI think it looks kind of cool! :) And, only deer, or a very talented pruner could achieve that kind of evenness.
ReplyDeleteOh Dear!
