Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

This Moment
This morning as I sat at my computer, I glanced over at the old stained glass window to my right and it was glowing. How could this happen? The sky outside was gray and just moments before the little line of blue sky close to the horizon had vanished behind thick clouds. Running outside for a better look, it seemed as if the sky was aflame. The beautiful golden tones it was giving to the large ornamental grasses that I had meant to cut down yesterday made me glad that I didn't get that job done. I snapped some pictues, looked down and noticed a crocus and suddenly all was gray again. It was one of those beautiful and fleeting (5 - 10 minutes) moments of light that made me happy to have experienced it.
This moment, perfect, golden, grasp it, see it.
This moment, laughing, happy, feel it, be it.
Curve of face, warmth of hands, butterfly...
Pin in place when it lands... Try!
This moment, ripened, bursting, taste it, name it.
This moment, precious, fleeting, catch it, frame it.
Curve of moon, warmth of air, willow bough...
Winter soon, be aware... Now! How?
This sadness! Aching, reaching, looking on...
at this moment, present, distant...
Shining bubble, touch it, lose it...
Happy, laughing, perfect, golden...
gone.
Words and music by John Bucchino. Here's the song it you'd like to hear it.
Absolutely beautiful...and a bit reason why I find it so hard to cut back the grasses right now, although I've started slowing cutting things back...I usually leave the grasses until last. I always find that those times, when something amazing and ephemeral happens, usually a spectacular sunrise or sunset...I want to run around, knocking on doors...it seems such a waste for everyone not to enjoy it too.
Thanks for sharing that beautiful morning glow with us. Usually I'm in the car on the way to or from the train station at that time of the morning. I've seen the golden glow but haven't been able to capture it. Of course with spring coming and the days lengthening, that glow is a moving target, so maybe I'll still have a chance.
It was a nice stroke of luck that I happened to be home to see this light show. Hooray for lengthening days! It's easier to get up in the morning when it's not pitch black outside. Soon we'll be able to get up with the sun again!
Wouldn't they be even more magical if the whole work thing was taken out of the equation? Or could it be that the brevity of our times in those moments is what makes them even more special?
Can both be true at the same time? I think so. It would be even more magical if you could linger in that moment. At least put work off for a bit. But there's something so pure about the moment in its brevity that makes it "that" moment and thereby special. Then again, there's the fact that they are uncommon to begin with around here which renders them special and thereby necessary that we enjoy them.
Lucky sloth...Johnny-on-the-spot with the camera when it counted. And aren't we the lucky ones to be on the receiving end of your virtual door-knocking (borrowed from Scott's comment above).
That is lovely :) grasses are wonderful for giving winter interest in the garden
ReplyDeleteThey are indeed. They are also good at littering beds with their shedding foliage. Love them though.

ReplyDeleteThanks Scott. I'm usually on my way to or from work when the best light happens but have a few days off so was lucky enough to capture this at home.

DeleteBeautiful Peter, thank you for sharing the moment with us. (and thanks for not being so motivated as to get the grasses cut back)
ReplyDeleteSometimes being a sloth pays off.

ReplyDeleteYup, I'm a lucky sloth! It's always fun to knock on virtual doors but on my blog, I try not to leave flaming bags of dog poop on the doorstep.
DeleteWhat a beautiful post. We all need a reminder every now and then that moments are passing by, and we need to appreciate each one.
ReplyDeleteI mostly appreciate the moments when I'm asleep. (Good practice for the big dirt nap to come.) Every now and then, there are nice reasons to be awake.
DeleteIt's wonderful when those moments come, and sad that they are always fleeting.
ReplyDeleteWell, everything in life is temporary so I guess we should find the joy in whatever we can.
