Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

So I Had to Stop at Watson's

On December twenty-second, the clock was ticking on finding a gift for a dear friend who has everything so I decided on a gift certificate from her favorite nursery so I had to stop by Watson's.  Here's some of what caught my eye.

The rusty metal trees have a price tag commensurate with their awesomeness so I'll simply admire them.

Primroses, hellebores, and a host of other winter bloomers kept a couple of hummingbirds busy.

These were already marked down 50%.

Nice foliage combination.

A tree decorated with artificial tillandsias, ornamental kale, succulents and topped with agave bulbils.

Umbrella trees?  Perfect for the PNW!

Baby cacti look so cute.

The crew were busy moving all sorts of merchandise around and putting ornaments in boxes for the upcoming sale.

Pests!

Velvet pomegranates.

Here's that weed pulling angel again.

Here's Cathy from Rambling in the Garden contemplating her next In a Vase on Monday offering.

Lots of fun stuff but I've got too much already so it was easy to stay away from the sales.  Instead, inspired by Linda from Each Little World, I've started to paint my dining room red.
Hope you're enjoying this week.  Are you taking advantage of any post Christmas sales?

  1. I always enjoy your nursery visits complete with fun commentary. A red dining room is perfect for your Victorian home. My entry is "Dried Chili Pepper" red and I still love it nearly 10 years later.

  2. Oh, I liked that kale tree... and the umbrella trees were funny too. I have one red wall in our dining room - Spanish Red from Benjamin Moore. Visually, it frames the red tile around the adjacent living room's fireplace. The other three walls are an ever-changing dark gray called Rocky Coast - also from BM. Sometimes it looks blue, sometimes gray, sometimes greenish, depending on the light. It sounds odd, but the ceiling is a corresponding gray metallic color. It's funny, but 12 years later, it's STILL my favorite room in the house - it's like a little jewel box. I'm sure you'll love your red dining room, too!

  3. Your commentary is so much fun. I streamlined my Christmas gift-giving many years ago, I don't get anything for anyone any more (I know, call me Ms. Scrooge, it's the truth!) I might get out to some sales today, I got dressed for the first time in three days this morning.

  4. I try to stay away from the post-Christmas decoration sales - it's enough of a chore to take down those I already have and pack them away. I do love that variegated hellebore, though...

  5. When you say "Pests!" I read Pets... I love those critters.
The last photo is a wonderful idea: an outdoor wreath that uses little terra cotta pots. I have quite a few and never knew what to do with them.

  7. I do not need more things, so I stay away from the mall. I would be too tempted, like I would be with those red velvet poms - they're gorgeous! Happy New Year, Peter!

  8. Those red velvet pomegranets are the perfect inspiration for a red room. I love the way you gave the angels such personalities of people we know. A good thing you stopped in there. Such pretties to see. I don't get out to shop much. I don't need another thing. I could use that variegated hellebore although we are having near record lows for this time of year. I will just have to dream about all of these goodies. You probably already know this but if you have to prime your walls before painting have the paint shop tint the primer with some red. It will then take fewer coats to cover. Can't wait to see your red room.

  11. I am staying away from sales too, since I too have more stuff than I need. Seeing it this way, through your camera, is safer.

  12. Goodness, I didn't realise Cathy had grown wings. She's kept very quiet about it.
Looking forward to seeing your red dining room.
