Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

(City) People's Progress

Back in February, Seattle's City People's Garden Store re-opened with new owners after having closed, everyone thought permanently, in December.  Visiting shortly after the re-opening, (post here) I was impressed with the amount of work that had happened in just a couple of weeks to refill the empty building. Back in June, after touring some gardens in the area, we decided to see how things were going.  What a delight to find the nursery once again wearing its summer finery, packed to the gills with great plants and all manner of garden accoutremens.

 Twig furniture is back.

The covered area once again an array of lovely vignettes, this one featuring Jose Gonzales, on of the new owners.

You may remember Jose, who's worked at City People's for years from this YouTube sensation:

Indoors, there is a greater emphasis on houseplants. There is still some really nice gift ware but plants are the main attraction. This makes complete sense for an urban nursery.

Looks like Alison and Jose have successfully brought back the magic of this place.
May you find new magic in the wonder that is your garden this weekend or at least keep cool.

  1. Ah, this makes me long for the fresh days of June! My garden is slumping in the heat, and so am I. But at least the lilies are blooming!
Thanks for another great photo tour, Peter. Looks like a place worth stopping for when we are in the area.

  2. Good to know that twig furniture is back. I've always admired it - don't have any personally. I keep thinking my husband could build me some.....but it isn't going to happen :)

Went out just this morning and trimmed off the flower stems of the hosta that were past the bloom stage. Sure made a difference. Now the Surprise Lilies are showing off.

Cool weather today after yesterday's rains. Feels more fall-ish than summer-ish for SURE!

  3. Thanks for reminding me about this lush nursery. The video is cute too. I am embarrassed to say I have not yet visited; got to put it on my calendar.
A third day of smoky air is upon us and it's wearing me out, TGIF!

  4. Ha! I hadn't seen that video before, it's good. What a happy thing, to see City People's full of plants again. I hope the surrounding community is giving them lots of love (buying plants).

  5. Oh, now I'm wishing we had stopped in here when we were running around North Seattle a few weekends ago. I forgot about it. I'd love to have some of that twig furniture. Like Linda, I'm sick of the heat, my garden is starting to fry, and so am I. Maybe when the coolth returns, I'll make a day of it and get back up north.

  6. Yes, this looks like a nice nursery. I saw many Heuchera in the picture. I'm sure many people walked in on their first opening day. Maybe you read my post about my favourite nursery?

  7. It's another great testimonial to the PNW's affection for plants that a beloved nursery has been resurrected. I'd give a lot to have seen that happen with a few of my favorite nurseries here but, sadly, it hasn't happened. I hope it cools down up your way! Even we aren't as hot as the PNW right now.

  9. Another great nursery! Maybe I'll find some new magic in my tropical cottage gardens. I'll keep cool by staying in the air-conditioning. :-)

Have a great weekend ~ FlowerLady

  11. Hope you get a little relief soon!
Great that this nursery came back, you don't often see that, usually the land turns into a high rise or condos...
A chorus of mother in law's tongues? What a nightmare.

  12. Looks like a fabulous garden center. So good to hear about an independent opening instead of closing!

  13. Bringing back magic in a nursery! Very good, and it reminds me to visit a new one here, to see if. I like the outdoor vignettes of patio furnishings, the outdoor rug, and so on...makes a big difference.

  14. It's sad when a good store closes. Glad this one came back.
