Yarn bombing, yarnstorming, guerrilla knitting, urban knitting or graffiti kniting is a type of street art that employs colorful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paint or chalk. Almost all hip cities have be hit by yarn bombers - Helsinki, London, New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Portland, and of course Palmer, Alaska...
Art or 1980's fashon statement?
Jennifer Beals called, she wants her leg warmers back!
Notice that the entire top of the handrail behind the post is also covered. What a feeling.Take your passion, make it happen. You can dance right through your life. Irene Cara's voice keeps calling to me. The bark on this tree almost looks like a gray ripped sweat shirt.
In case you are too young to remember the 1980's, here's the song that I now can't get out of my head.
But seriously, this touch of colorful whimsey brought a smile to my face and as Ms. Danger says, "Things that make you smile are good things." Or was that Martha Stewart? I'm easily confused.
This has been used to protect the young trees in a square in our town centre. Shortly after being planted a small number had the bark pulled off by vandals. The replacement trees and the existing all had yarn bomb trunks, very colourful and its stopped any more vandalism so far
ReplyDeleteThat's wonderful! What is the thrill that vandals get from destroying living things? I'll never understand that.
ReplyDeleteAgh, I didn't even have to watch the video to get an earworm. At least it replaced yesterday's, which I got from my own blog. There are yarn-bombers in Seattle, although I've never seen their work. Some of the Flingers took pictures. I'm all for strange and colorful yard art, but this is too much for me. Loved your tongue in cheek post.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the earworm, just had to pass it along. Glad you liked the post.
DeleteOh thanks for the memories! Guess I'm going to have to take a break from the Christmas music to pull out my Flashdance CD and have a listen...
ReplyDeleteI bet you have a torn sweatshirt, some leggings and leg warmers that you could throw on while you dance to your CD!
DeleteEpic!!! I can't even put into words how happy this made me.
ReplyDeleteMaking you happy makes me happy. Now we're both happy!
DeleteIt brought a smile to your face and a song to your lips and now I will be humming What a Feeling all day long too!
ReplyDeleteContagious isn't it?
DeleteWho would expect "knitting" and "guerilla" to be linked in any way? The incongruity of it tickles my fancy.
ReplyDeleteI regularly order Flashdance on Netflix just for the dancing. Thanks for letting me get my fix without having to slog through the story line.
Always trying to be of service.
DeleteI thought at first you meant yam bombing, which is a concept people should look into, as long as the yams are cooked. Otherwise would hurt.
ReplyDeleteYes but wouldn't the marshmallows make everyone's hair really sticky? I yam what I yam and that's all that I yam. I'm Popeye, the sailor man, toot toot. For some reason I'm in the mood for a nice spinach salad.
DeleteWhimsical but definitely a trend I will pass on in my own garden. Stupid question of the day but inquiring minds like mine want to know (now be gentle)-how do people get the garments onto the trees/poles, etc? Do they sew a seam up one side or knit it in place?
ReplyDeleteHaving never taken part in this sort of thing, I'm not sure but I imagine that the knitter makes a rectangle, wraps it around the object and then sews the ends together.
DeleteLove this! I wish I could knit. I would do this in a heart beat.
ReplyDeleteYou could always take up another hobby to go with the quilting.
DeleteI'm proud & happy to say that Sydney has been hit by yarn bombers as well; not by me, although I'm now inspired to knit a little number for my Lithops in winter. :)
ReplyDeleteHooray! I can just see little scarves on your Lithops - too cute.
DeleteI saw the trunks and thought it's not healthy for them.
ReplyDeleteThe Flashdance is gorgeous. I love it very much. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed Flashdance!
