O.K. I'll admit it, seeing Christmas lights makes me smile. Goodness knows I'm far too lazy to put any up myself but I love it when others do. My mother also loved Christmas lights and the color blue so when my niece and I drove by this city park in Anchorage in which all the lights were blue, we had to stop and explore!
The following two pictures are of the same scene but with different playing with knobs and gadgets on the fancy pants camera..
The trees look almost unreal in this second one. Weird.
And speaking of colorful sights in the park -These decorative fence panels with wild iris cutouts were in several other public areas in town as well.
Wish I remembered the name of this sculpture but it certainly is reminiscent of dried whale bones - not an uncommon sight in costal villages.
How close are you to being ready? I'm about 50% finished with my shopping for/ making gifts.
I like Christmas lights too, but I don't have any. Only electic candles.
ReplyDeleteI have Christmas lights in plastic tubs in my basement. What a wonderful Christmas gift to myself that I don't have to put them up or take them down!
DeleteThose trees are so pretty with the blue lights. Very icy like the weather. I can imagine whoever did that was pretty cold in the process.
ReplyDeleteFunny, but that bench looks cold. Not too many homeless guys on the streets there I bet.
I do like the sculpture, very Alaska.
It was cold that night although it's currently much colder (15 below zero was yesterday's high) Truth be told, the homeless guy is my niece's husband who had just returned from the North Slope. We found the bottle discarded in the park and decided to play a little.
DeleteThe photos of a blue Christmas are lovely. That photo you labeled 'weird' is quite otherworldly looking but beautiful, almost as if the trees were made of feathers. Love the fence cutouts!
ReplyDeleteI hope the guy got medical attention. Cold weather exposure and alcohol don't mix well.
Otherworldly is a much more apt word choice. I must pull that dusty thesaurus off the shelf and start using some better words!
DeleteYup, that guy needed attention alright! The niece was in such a charitable mood that she took him home. I've tried to warn her about picking up characters in places like this but what can you do? The kids hit 40 and think they know everything.
It amazes me the lengths some people go to in putting up Christmas lights. I like the simple ones the best, like those gorgeous blue trees.
ReplyDeleteI agree but there's still something of a kid in me that makes me giggle at the houses (you know the ones) that have every imaginable kind of lighted ornament, blow up do dads, wood cut outs, etc. and EVERYTHING covered in lights. You know, the kind of place you can see from space. It's sort of a folk art kind of a thrill.
Delete"And speaking of colorful sights in the park"
ReplyDeleteLiving the dream, Anchorage style?
Ah, that's the life!
DeleteWe have our lights up...but I still haven't bought any presents...eek!
ReplyDeleteWell, you've clearly thought about it and it is, after all, the thought that counts. I was all ready for no Christmas decorations at all this year when yesterday there arrived a package from Jackson and Perkins with a pre decorated Alberta Spruce; a gift from my eldest sister. Sometimes it's hard to be a grinch!
DeleteI like blue lights! And it makes me think of Elvis "I'll have a blue christmas..." But seriously, shopping almost done, wrapping almost done, baking almost done ... let the festivities begin!
ReplyDeleteWow, look at you! Everything almost done AND baking too? You're a regular Martha Stewart! I, on the other hand, am enjoying being a total sloth!
DeleteThe blue lights are pretty- one just because they are and two because they are different, not something you see everywhere. I am behind but the house is decorated and tree is up. Shopping had gotten pushed off a bit but have been starting to get back out there and get it done little by little. Still can't believe it is almost here!!!!
ReplyDeleteI know right? Wasn't it just Halloween? Oh well, spring is just around the corner. O.K. so through a rather long tunnel, left at the light, straight for three miles, right at the sign, keep going as the the pavement ends, travel the bumpy dirt road until you cross the railroad tracks, left again and it's the first season on the right just after you pass March. But close.
DeleteI am glad to here that the colorful sight was a small prank. It looks to cold for that anti-freeze to work. After years of no lights, I felt we needed them this year, so they are lighting up a string of found crab pot buoys and fir branches hanging from the porch.
ReplyDeleteIt was quite cold but thankfully the wind wasn't blowing. Hooray for the return of your lights! I hope next year to haul my decorations out again but haven't felt like doing it for a few years now.
DeleteThe white snow and blue lights- they are go to one another.
ReplyDeleteI think that drunk has good health sleeping in the snow street.
They make a lovely combination! That drunk would have to be very healthy to stay outside when it was so cold.
DeleteWe cheat: there are colored lights all around the deck which stay there year-round. They add a festive touch to summer dinners. Sometimes we go so far as to trade out all the bulbs for orange at Halloween. My preference is the clear twinklers, so I get to use those on the tree indoors. No question: lights say "Celebration!"
ReplyDeleteOur neighbor has colored lights that live on his fence year round. They are large spheres, are quite festive in the summer and shed a litte light on the path through our bamboo grove that would otherwise be very dark at night. If I weren't so lazy, I'd put lights up for the summer but we seldom stay out in the dark for very long.
