Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

The Northwest Flower and Garden Festival Part 3: The Floral Competition

The Northwest Flower and Garden Festival is in full swing now.  Today let's take a look at the entries in the floral competition.

Fena Flowers "Parisian Gardens"

Flora Grand "Biomimicry"

Grand & Jensen Floral Events "Tropical Delight"

Shady Vines Floral Co "El Inferno Verde"

Gregory's "Kaleidoscope"

Spirit Line Pottery "Greenman's Luck"

The Flower Lady "Floral Delight"

La Vassar Florists "Path to Mindfulness"

Young Flowers "Atlantis"

The NFGF is all about sharing fabulous ideas from the large to small.  So much to see and do: seminars,  a vintage market, vendors selling everything garden-related -art, plants, tools, books, you name it, it's there.  Among the highlights of the show for me is seeing friends.  I hope you have the opportunity to participate in the show.  If you can't make it this year, mark your calendars for next year's show March 4 - 8.

  1. From elegant to whimsical and everything in between. So many details. Is the green man an homage to Cisco Morris? It was a miracle that the snow episode ended the week before the show open. This may be the reason they moved next year's show to early March.

    1. With the "Oh La La" sign and the face that certainly looked like Ciscoe, I think it was an homage to him. The snow was a hardship for a lot of folks who had to pack up, move in, and set up the week before the show. Seems like the show has always been in February but maybe the snow played a part in the later date next year.

  2. I took a look at the Floral Competition yesterday as I was leaving. Does it seem like there were fewer than in past years or am I misremembering? I wasn't particularly taken with any of them, although I did like the use of the black Scabiosa in the one with the copper vessel. Usually there is at least one that I really love and one that I really dislike, but none of these stirred me up. And none of my impressions ever coincide with the judges' choices.

  3. Oh, to have access to any floral and foliage material you could possibly want! My favorite is "El Inferno Verde" which struck me as the most cohesive.

    1. Can you imagine such a thing? Working on that scale would be interesting as well.

  4. I like the cactus going down the side of this last one. It seemed like several had good looking rocks in the design too. They are all interesting.

    1. The rocks and cactus integrated into the arrangements were very interesting.

  5. I always love seeing what the florists create for these big shows. Shady Vines Floral Co "El Inferno Verde" and Young Flowers "Atlantis" were my favorites.

  6. Again, another set of great photos. I decided not to take my big Nikon, traveled light, and just used my iPhone 8. There's a good little camera in that phone. We arrived at the show at 9AM on Thursday, and the sun was shining through the windows behind the arrangements, and then when we left at 7:PM the sky was almost dark, so it was hard to get good light on my arrangement photos. I hae some though, which I may get to posting later.

    1. When my current phone, that has a bad and unreliable camera, dies, I'll definitely be looking for one with a good camera so I don't have to lug around the big camera all the time.

    1. Pretty amazing that some of these folks do it year after year and always come up with something different.

    1. Funny, that one made made me think of you when I saw it. Soft and romantic and the "pink gold" spray on the ferns brought to mind Plum Cottage for some reason.

  10. I'm a more is usually better but I always want to see some simple Ikebana after looking at these. So much is going on in each one that I find it hard to focus.

    1. Fear not, a post of the Ikebana display at the show will be coming up soon.

  11. Thanks for the virtual tour of the show Peter. Some truly imaginative creations all around. Will definitely mark my calendar for next year. With all the cold and snow here it comes as a small window into the promise of Spring.
