Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Christmas Arrives in a Box

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate the day!  "And on earth, peace, goodwill to all."

A box arrived in the mail last week.  My eldest sister decided that since I was too lazy to drag a tree out this year, she'd make sure that one appeared at our house anyway.  Inside the package was an Alberta Spruce in a gallon container, a decorative cache pot in which to place it, lights and decorations.

There's something about oldest siblings...

Well, I guess we'll have a tree this year after all.  It would be a shame and rather rude to ignore the poor thing.

I added some dried hydrangeas to the bottom to hide the pot and threw on some extra fused glass snowflakes just for fun.
Okay, one last Finnish Christmas song.  (Youtube takes one to the most interesting places.)

Snow on the fields, silent streets
the misery of autumn is left behind.
The flow of memories, the fairy tales of childhood
The message of Christmas is a new opportunity.

It's Christmas again, rejoice!
A child has been born to us tonight.
Let all the people on earth have hope,
Let all the prisoners [be set] free,
Let the seed of faith rise
Let there be never ending peace.

I'd like to go with the shepherds
To forget the hurry and tiresome rackett.
When the morning came, did anyone know
that first Christmas
could change history?

It's Christmas again, rejoice!
A child has been born to us tonight
Let all the people have hope,
Let all the prisoners free.
Let there be love inside the people
That's when we have Christmas.

If you want to find eternal Christmas
open your heart and meet the Saviour
You will not find gold or a celebration
You'll only find a crib and a simple stable.

It's Christmas again, rejoice!
A child has been born to us tonight
Let all the people on earth have hope,
Let all the prisoners free
Let the seed of faith rise
Let there be never ending peace.

It's Christmas again, let the bells ring
Somewhere a Mother is swadling her child...

  1. Everyone needs a tree and yours makes me smile. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas Day.

  2. Oh dear. I don't think even a tree sent in the mail could entice me to decorate for Christmas. Maybe if the entire thing was compostable, and could be taken out, ornaments and all and put in the yard waste bin entirely. Part of what keeps me from decorating is knowing I will have to take it all down.

    1. This was super easy. The decorations are tiny and can be put in a tiny box, the tree is potted so can go outside. Really easy to deal with.

  3. Thank heavens for older sisters, this is a perfect size for a fuss free Christmas tree.

    1. I'm lucky to have three older sisters. This size really was very easy. I bought a few things at the Watson's after Christmas sale today so will have to decorate next year to justify the purchase.

  4. Your sister doesn't do things by half! I for one appreciate the Finnish music - if my mother were still here, I'm sure she'd be thrilled to know I was listening to Finnish Christmas carols. Have a wonderful day, Peter!

    1. No, she doesn't. Glad you're enjoying the Finnish music. There's a very sweet, kind, and smart elderly Finnish woman who sings in the church choir I direct. She's introduced me to lots of wonderful music and has taught me a phrase or two. (Had to learn the swearing on the streets of the internet.) Having sung so much Christmas literature over the years, it's always nice to hear/sing something new to me.

  5. Aw, what a sweet gesture. Now, where will you find space to plant it? ;)

    1. Fortunately, it's a dwarf that can take pruning. It'll stay in a pot for several years.

  6. Nice. That worked out well and was probably fun to put together! -and much less trouble than dragging the tree in :)
