Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Wednesday Vignette - Where Have All the Flowers Gone?

Wednesday Vignette is hosted by Anna at Flutter and Hum.  Click here to join in the fun!

Last week was cold with low temperatures in the high teens around these parts.  Hummingbird feeders had to be thawed early each morning to make sure that our local birds had something to eat. Bugs are few and far between this time of year and I'm not sure if the few open blooms produce anything worthwhile when temperatures are below freezing.

Here, a hummingbird perched on a maple branch asks a mahonia, "Where have all the flowers gone?"

  1. Sounds you are back to living in Alaska!

  2. "Young girls have picked them, every one." I wish that were the case, but I think Jack Frost stole them. Is it really true that you finally have no flowers in your garden? It seems you always have something blooming there.

    1. There are a few blooms but nobody is fond of this cold.

  3. Dreary. I sure am glad I'm not a humming bird this time of year. Although, with a fresh clean feeder every morning maybe it ain't too bad (do you have hummer-feeders?).
The mahonia in my garden isn't blooming yet; the buds are pretty full and ready to open.

  4. Oh, my heart breaks for the dear hungry hummers. Of course, we only see them from May through October, when there is plenty of food here. You are fortunate to have them year-round, but I hope you will soon have blooms again--for the hummingbirds and for you!

  5. There's perhaps no better testimony as to the difference between our climates than the fact that you have to thaw the contents of your hummingbird feeders! I hope you get some warm, sunny days soon, Peter.

  6. Poor hummers. I think any that might have hung around here have long since retreated to lower elevations and more urban areas. The plants I added this year that might feed them in future won't start blooming for another year or two, and I'm too lazy to manage a feeder in the winter.

  7. Lonely little guy, but he likes it that way. At least if he's anything like the little bully that defends my feeder from all the other interloper hummingbirds. Today, as a particularly desperate stranger fed, my resident bird actually pecked him repeatedly on the back to try to roust him. At least they all have the Arctostaphylos flowers as a backup right now.

  9. Great shot Peter! There was a little bird hoping around our garden this morning while I was taking photos. I meant to put water out for him, and his friends, but then forgot...until just now. I am lucky any birds spend time in my garden since I don't go out of my way to do anything for them.
