I was surprised to hear the voice on my car radio announce that sunset would be nearly half an hour later than it had been last time I was listening. Lately, the strong and sweet fragrances of sarcococca and Lonicera fragrantissima greet our comings and goings. The garden has already started responding to the increase of light. From the death and decay of the old year springs something new. There are signs of hope even in the cold and wet of winter.

Refreshing post. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI did notice the increased light, thank god! No signs of spring growth though. Maybe I'd better check out a couple of neighbors gardens who I know have an abundance of bulbs.
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely to see the bulb foliage appear!
ReplyDeleteI finally got out there to assess the damage and was heartened by several brave pioneers leading the way to Spring.
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, that is so encouraging to see! I was wondering if I had any spring plants beginning to poke through and I was planning to check the other day. I missed my chance--we're getting a few inches of snow today. Oh well, it is January. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the uplifting post!
ReplyDeleteOooh - is it time already??? How wonderful! I need to get out there.... Thanks for being my Harbinger of Spring, Peter! :)
ReplyDeleteNo bulbs are emerging in my garden yet; your garden always seems to start earlier then mine. The stinky Hellebore is blooming and the Mahonia is exploding with buds, all extremely encouraging signs!
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check on my Galanthus. I haven't noticed them, but I have seen crocus starting to pop up (and in one bed being gobbled up by voles).
ReplyDeleteLucky you! It has been so cloudy that the later sunset does not seem noticeable here.
ReplyDeleteI have that same vignette right outside my family room window! I have sprigs of sarcococca in the house. Heavenly fragrance!
ReplyDeleteWinter always gets better IMO after the holidays: less stress and visibly longer days. New growth already?! Another month before I see the early emergers I think.
ReplyDeleteLovely to see them. Everything is very late here.
