Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

In A Vase On Monday

On Sunday, after the last service at Church, the altar flowers are given away.  This week, in celebration of our recent wedding, the flowers were given to us.  What a lovely surprise and perfect timing for In A Vase on Monday, hosted each week by the talented Carol at Rambling in the Garden.

Because some of the flowers are orange,  this blue glass vase came to mind.

The fragrance of eucalyptus greens is as warm as the flower colors.

This  golden bird vase, purchased at Molbaks at their 90% off sale for less than two dollars reminds me of the Oliver Herford poem, I heard a bird sing:

I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December.
A magical thing
And sweet to remember.

"We are nearer to spring
Than we were in September."
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December.

Of course, it's no longer December and spring draws nearer every day.  There are lots of white flowers representing the cold of winter and some bright orange rays of hope that spring and summer will come once again.

  1. Lovely arrangement ,but what a thoughtful gesture from your church. One would like to think all congregations were so thoughtful and inclusive.

    1. It's a fairly special group of people which is probably why I've kept what was to be a temporary job there for twenty years now.

  3. I love this poem. I'll send it to my mom; she loves listening to birds' songs.

  4. You do have the most marvelous collection of vases, not that it should be surprising given your work with glass. The church's floral gift and the vase complement each other beautifully, and the golden bird adds that extra special something to the vignette. The poem puts the whole thing over the top - wonderful!

    1. Thanks Kris, it was a very nice thing for the church to do. That vase came from a Fred Meyer 60% off sale many years ago and I think this is the first time it's held flowers.

  5. What a great idea to share the flowers with parishioners. I love your blue-swirl vase, it adds the perfect contrast to the blooms. And congrats on your recent wedding!

    1. The church where I work has always done that. The flowers always find their way home with someone or are given to shut-ins. It's kind of a fun tradition. Thanks.

    1. Indeed! Remember when there were huge local greenhouses, Like Beall Roses on Vashon Island, that grew cut flowers?
