Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Finally the Sun Broke Through the Fog

After nearly two weeks of nothing but dense fog,  there was sunshine and blue sky.   Since I was already going to be late for work, why not pull out my camera and take a picture of my street.  It would have been a good day to call in sick.

On the way home, a walk through the park was definitely in order!

Who could resist the warm riches of the season?

These pictures were taken just before a rather strong windstorm we had recently.  The colors of the leaves seem quite intense this autumn.
It all seemed so much brighter for having been shrouded in fog for so long.  Lots of folks were out enjoying the crisp and sunny October day.

Swimming in the lake of fire?

If only winter's nakedness were not so close.  Perhaps their fleeting nature makes summer and autumn even more dear.

Here's Hydrangea quercifolia dressed in red for the season.
I hope you are enjoying the charms of autumn!

  1. You got some great shots, especially of the trees reflected in the water. And the ducks too!

  3. Beautiful photos, Peter...I've been tempted to call in sick quite a bit lately, just to be able to enjoy the turning foliage :-)

  4. The color certainly has been fabulous this year, so nice to get to enjoy the leaves without all the rain and wind to hasten their demise. Kudos to you for not calling in sick, it must have been very tempting.

    1. It is very tempting when it's so gorgeous outside. Of course it's also tempting when it's awful outside and no one wants to venture out. Since I've got enough sick leave days to take the rest of the year off, maybe I should use one every now and then.

  5. I like the way you think - "as long as I was going to be late for work---"
Love it, and your beautiful photos which capture the essence of fall!

    1. I don't feel horribly guilty for being a little late because I always stay much later than I have to. Easier for me to get things done later in the day.

    1. Practically a saint, right? Well, it was a Sunday when I only work until 1:00 so not really a full day's work.

    1. Yes but you can grow great Agaves, Cacti, and other arid/ heat loving plants so much better than we can!

  8. "Charms" is right! I really thought the colors were going to be less than wonderful this year....but as it has turned out, it's as beautiful as ever! It's quite impossible for me to photographically capture the trees in their real-life splendor...

    1. I've never seen a photograph that's as wonderful as the true glowing vibrance of autumn leaves. Beautiful foliage this year!

  9. These are beautiful pictures of a time that's already past in this neck of the woods. I was just discussing with my husband how invigorating a sunny day is at this time of year! We're wet and cooler this week, but I'm hopeful for more sun before the leaves are quite gone.

    1. These pictures were taken early last week before the big wind storm that stripped so many trees of all of their leaves. Crazy the difference a week can make.

    1. Our winter isn't so bad though. We'll be busy with the holidays and by late January, the snowdrops, pussy willows and others will start popping up, the days will grow longer little by little. Who am I trying to convince? Let's just move someplace warm!

  13. As always, thanks for the beautiful photos. There is a Mary Chapin Carpenter song that says something like "...call in 'well' sometime, and laugh together when they 'get it'...." Try it sometime. Best to you!
