Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Playing With New Toys

What does one do after Christmas?  Play with new toys, of course.  I'm a bit of a Luddite so playing with phone apps is a novelty still.  Oil Effect and Paintlogue, apps that edit images to look like oil or water color paintings,  have been my playthings of choice in the last couple of days.  It doesn't take much to amuse a simple mind like mine.  Here are a few of the phone-created "paintings."

Colchicum  in Oil Effect.

Here they are as a water color made by Paintlogue.

A cutie pie in oil.

Another in water color.

An image by Lani Neil of a gathering to celebrate the birthday of my glass guru and friend, Florence, in Oil Effect.  A warm gathering of friends.

During this festive season, I hope you have a little free time to play!  Happy fourth day of Hanukkah and third day of Christmas.

  1. Quirky how much they retain of the photo and how much they change all at the same time. Is that your dining room? Terrific space whether it's yours or not.

    1. No, that's Florence's dining room, a magical place.

  2. I like what you did with the crocuses. I've played with photoshop filters before; they can evaporate your time so quickly, if I let them. That last picture looks like it was painted by one of the Masters: very cool.

    1. You're right, playing with pictures like this can really evaporate time but it's fun when it's too cold and wet to play in the garden.

  3. These are wonderful! I tried some of Google's Deep Dream software during its early testing phase but those results tended more toward the creepy.

  4. I've seen other pictures manipulated like this. I love the effect, but I use my phone so seldom for photos I'm not sure it's worth it for me to get one of those apps. I do like what you've done here very much.

    1. The best thing is that the oil app is free and the water color one was three bucks. I don't use my phone for many pictures either but can download them from my camera and email them to myself and get them in the phone that way.

  5. I find my Waterlogue app fascinating to use. One quickly figures out what photos make the best "paint" images, but to me, the best part is watching the evolving image as it transforms.

  6. Like computer games (never played solitaire, angry birds, etc...) I've not caught the app bug. I remember my nephew borrowing my iPad and laughing at my lack of apps. See, you're re not such a Luddite compared to me!

  7. Hi Peter! As one Russian proverb says: It doesn't matter what the kid plays with as long as he doesn't cry.
I'm sure you are enjoying this Holiday Season. One of the December's highlights for me was our visit to the OGF. I thought about you and your OGF posts, and told the owners about them. I also put a couple of links to your blog in my OGF post. Hope one day to meet you there!

    1. Thanks for the link love, Tatyana! Perhaps this summer we could schedule a time to meet at OGF and also tour the Chase Garden at the same time as it's just up the road. Thanks also for the beautiful post about the OGF tea and gorgeous decorations!
