Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

A Morning in Seattle Part 4; An Unusual Fremont Hell Strip

Have you ever, while riding in a vehicle,  seen  something that made you yell, "Pull over" to the driver?  Of course you have and such was the case with  this hell strip in Fremont.  It started out fairly tame.

But the rather personal and unique style of the place quickly made itself known.

Love this sphere and originally thought that it was created this way but now am wondering if it is perhaps a large vase with a broken top.

The gardener is certainly not afraid of color!

How can one enjoy such a space?  While I won't be mounting any plastic children's toys to rusty poles in my garden, here it fit the color scheme perfectly.

It looks as if there's more to come!  (Lens is getting foggy from all of the rain.)

Happy Funky Fremont Friday!   Funky Fremont is a bit redundant but thank goodness that there are still some areas that haven't been totally gentrified, sanitized, McMansionized, Walmarted, Costcoed, Disneyfied, and "Landscaped" to death.  Sorry, too harsh?  What I meant to say was brought up to code.

  1. My new rule: Just because you have it, you don't have to include it.

The little walkway in the first photo looks as if they attended my school of path-making: if it's shaped like a paver, fit it in.

  2. "Impressive." As is the fact you braved the rain to capture it all.

  3. This is more fun then an empty sidewalk, that is for sure. It looks like someones "test" garden:
"lets add this to the mix and see if it work" kind of place .
The entryway with the yellow flowering climber speaks to me.

  4. Love it!! So much character! It must be so much fun for people to have something like that to walk past - it definitely livens things up. That's definitely not a sedate little hellstrip!

  6. fun and quirky - so much more character than formulaic landscaping, Disneyfication, etc.

  8. Definitely a 'walker's' garden... you would have to stroll for a bit to take everything in... and do things like talk to neighbors and be seen outside, all that awkward stuff which makes a neighborhood :)
For a 45mph drive-by I'm sure grass would be neater and have more curb-appeal. They could sell in no time and wisk themselves off to a gated community with a HOA before winter.

  9. Certainly not to my taste but there is plenty to see. It's certainly colourful and has us talking about it. Perhaps this is what the owners set out to achieve. Thanks for making the effort in that rain to get some shots Peter.

  12. A fun and creative parkway. Really uninhibited use of colors.

  13. I can't help but admire it when someone goes all in like this.

  14. I wouldn't do this in my own garden, but I love when others do, and I would have also demanded that the driver stop so I could take some photos. In a world far from short of ho hum sameness, I love when someone expresses a little character.
