Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Grocery Store Succulents

Our neighborhood grocery store, Stadium Thriftway, has a great floral department that often has unusual blooms and fun potted plants.  Last night, it was a surprise to see these bouquets including leucadendron, nandina(?) berries and cut succulents. Interesting, colorful, and with the added bonus of being able to root a new plant as well.

Color this now I've seen everything.  On a table just above those bouquets were "Bagged Echeverias."  No roots, just the cut top which would, of course form roots if placed on soil or even if not.  However, for $8.99, I'd rather get a four inch pot of dirt full of roots than a decapitated echeveria in a plastic bag that would be tossed out.  Cute gift idea though.

Happy weekend everyone!

  1. Maybe I should look more closely at grocery store offerings. The only real bargain I ever got was a really neat planter with a dead plant marked down to cheap.

  2. That is a lovely bouquet. You might be able to root the Leucadendron too.

  3. I love the echeveria in floral bouquets … but the bare ones sitting in plastic bags … you're right, a nice rooted plant would be a much nicer gift. BTW… I'm planning my return to the blogging world. starting with immersing myself in garden blogging inspiration.

  5. Hmmm. Maybe instead of dismantling my succulent vase, I should put it up for sale? At $9 per cutting, that would be one (ridiculously) expensive arrangement.

  6. Hello Peter lad !
You made me giggle with the decapitation description .. and yes you are right .. more bang for the buck indeed ! .. I will have to look more closely at those grocery store displays too .. although ?
I am a serial plant killer in the house ... I have no idea why ... but it just keeps happening ... even the hard to kill ones are killed by you know who .... why oh why ?
Tomorrow I hope to be in the garden rubber boots and all to get 'er done mission that is so needed ... BIG sigh ... come over and help me please ?? LOL
    Take care
    Joy : )

  7. I wonder what idiot thought up the decapitated succulent in a bag idea? It's just so bad...

  8. Maybe I should go into the florist business! $8.99 for an unrooted cutting in a bag! Ha!

  9. Interesting decapitated Echeveria in a bag. Hmmm. Amazing bouquets in that first photo, though! Some of our local grocery stores offer great deals and creative arrangements, too. Sometimes, I buy the "3 for" deals as fillers for arrangements.

  10. I am always amused at the plants for sale for people who don't know anything about plants.

  11. Such sad, bagged little Marie Antoinettes.... I do like that first arrangement, though. Perfect for an autumnal table setting, methinks!
