Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Wednesday Vignette

Today's Wednesday Vignette is of alien sky eaters.

They came to earth years ago and have been eating the ozone layer for quite a while. And all this time we've been blaming climate change on the burning of fossil fuels.

Have you guessed what they really are?  They're last year's seed pods of Cardiocrinum giganteum in the shade garden at Far Reaches Farm.  (Or are they?)
Wednesday Vignette is sponsored by Anna at Flutter and Hum.

  1. They're beautiful! Looking forward to having some of my own, albeit much shorter ones, this year.

    1. I think they're as cool as the flowers and they last a lot longer!

    1. Spooky! Brought the fairy tale "Little Red Riding Hood" to my mind! Those look like the wolf's teeth in one of my childhood storybooks.

    2. But whatever they promise you, don't feed the plant!

    3. They do look like the wolf's teeth! Now where are you going with that basket Rebecca Ridinghood?

  3. Very cool. I never attempted growing one of those. Have you?
I believe it's time to congratulate you on the beginning of summer break. Have fun and relax in your garden (as much as the heat wave allows)

    1. I've had them for several years and enjoy them quite a bit! Thanks! Summer is finally here. No relaxing in the garden, this is my busy time when I can spend whole days doing projects. We've severely cut back the timber bamboo grove and soon I'll be digging up runners. Keeping ahead of the emerging culms is a daily job. Also have finally gotten a lot of the pot ghetto planted in the ground. Am reworking a bed that used to be full of bamboo but now has the new fence.

  4. Cute! Had to look up Cardiocrinum, though. I see why you called them sky eaters, they grow so tall.

  5. Are you sure they are not fossilized T-rex skulls attached to an alien totem pole? Let'em eat sky! :)

    1. It's the heat wave you know. Poor Audrey is looking a bit parched.

  11. I love this so much! I hope my cardiocrinum stalk will stay in place through the winter, so I get this effect in the devil garden next year. I'm thinking it may disintegrate in the rain though. Maybe I'll bring it inside when it looks on the verge, then take it out for the summer. Thanks for these photos!

    1. These were in the rain all winter. Never fear, they won't disintegrate.
