Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

More 12 x 12: The Garden of Nadine Hamil

A day or two before the 12th x 12th event, Nadine shared the following two pictures on the event's facebook page.

One doesn't often see a suit of armor in a garden!  This was definitely a garden I wanted to see!
On the day of the event, I had to work in the afternoon so only had a couple of hours to see as much as I could.  While the map was great,  it listed all of the addresses but didn't say which were garage sales, open gardens or both. Given a bit more time, it would have been great to see all of the listings. Anyway, I missed Nadine's garden but later contacted her and she sent more pictures; here they are.

Nadine considers her garden part of her art.  "I created Artful Dreamers Studio, new in Tacoma to share ART with everyone. I give workshops to encourage everyone to create. I teach an easy way to paint & more... My husband and I moved from Florida to live closer to our kids in October 2013, where I had a studio and worked with kids, seniors, people in recovery sharing art because I believe art heals everyone & it is tons of fun.

"My husband manufactures  greenhouses, SOLAR GEM GREENHOUSES in Tacoma."

Bamboo in a stock tank - cool!

Unfortunately only one person from the event found Nadine's garden.  There must have been something strange with the address on the map as I punched a couple into my phone's GPS that returned strange messages about not existing.

Mermaid swimming in a calendula sea.
Thanks, Nadine, for sending pictures of your garden!

Happy weekend and Happy gardening everyone!

  1. Very creative and colorful! If I had a suit of armor in my garden there would probably be raccoons living in it...

  2. Love the colorful, fancy bottles on sticks. Looks like a fun garden, it's too bad you didn't get to actually see it in person. Maybe next year! I sometimes get that message on Bitchin' Betty that the address does not exist.

    1. It does look like a fun garden to visit. I hope the event happens again next year! Good to know that Betty and Wilma both get a bit cranky at times.

  6. Very eclectic and colorful. I like the mermaid because the eyes are kind of creepy. Huh, what does that say about me? Lol

  8. What a shame (and disappointment for a gardener who'd no doubt put in extra work into her gardens.....)!

  9. Oh, that looks like fun! So unfortunate that almost everyone missed it.

  10. So interesting that the artist considers the garden a part of her art. What a fun and whimsical garden! It looks like such a cool garden to visit - so sad hardly anybody made it out there!

  11. What a shame that most people couldn't find the garden, the owners must have worked so hard to get it ready for the open day.Looks like a fun garden to visit.

  12. Just a note on the location. To keep the event walkable the map was limited to N 12th x S 12th and between Union and State Streets. The address Nadine sent us is quite a bit outside the 12x12 map area but we made sure her address was listed, it was clearly stated below the map. We could expand the tour or Nadine might want to create a walkable tour in her neighborhood. We'll figure it out.

    1. The event was fabulous! I did wee the more distant postings but due to a last minute change of plans, I didn't have time to visit them. My bad. I love both garage sales and garden tours and am delighted that you put this tour together. Tacoma no longer has a garden tour and it was a delight to again tour gardens here!

  14. Open garden nightmare: crowds of people overrunning the place. Alternate nightmare: no one will come. I hope Nadine is not too discouraged. Your post should help.
