Spring has also arrived at Portland Nursery on Division!
I was surprised to see these in bloom already as mine are barely emerging from the ground. However, I just got a report on Tuesday that they're blooming in some gardens here in Tacoma! Wonderful warm spring!
These two seem oblivious to the blooms all around them. Must b quite a chess game!
Both in the concrete jungle
and countryside, spring has arrived!
Love the frills on these florist cyclamen but resisted.
Even this picotee!
I admire the deep saturation of Pericallis but they're fairly short lived for me. If you can't go without water for a while, you won't make it in my garden!
This tropical pitcher plant proved too great a temptation. Hope I can keep it alive!
Portland Nursery on Division has a large and well stocked indoor plant section through which are scattered interesting indoor gardens like this one.
This Begonia sp. would have come home with me if I didn't already have one!
Their Solandra maxima was blooming. I understand that they smell like piña colada but the flower was about 3 feet above my head. The blooms are awsome and seeing this one growing so well in a greenhouse gives me an idea...
Happy Friday the thirteenth and have a great weekend!
Ohh I quote like those chess playing frogs! Have a great weekend ahead!
ReplyDeleteI often wondered what frogs do to pass the time.
DeleteI'm not sure about those ruffled cyclamen; does everything look better with ruffles?
ReplyDeleteMy bleeding hearts are rocketing out of the ground as we speak, but certainly no blooms yet. No rush. I want to savor the season.
Did you get a Solandra or are we going to have to wait in suspense till next visit to your green house?
I kind of liked the ruffles but like the ones without too. I didn't gt a Solandra as I didn't se them for sale. This one was growing up the ceiling of their green house.
DeleteMy Dicentra 'Gold Heart' are blooming, even though they're barely a foot tall. I should have asked you to get me a pitcher plant. I hope yours does well, it should love living in your greenhouse!
ReplyDeleteIt will be happy there but I should probably bring it in for the winter as the expert at the store said that they get pretty upset with temperatures cooler than 50 degrees and during those cold snaps in November and December, it got down to the mid 40's in the greenhouse.
DeleteYour photo of the bleeding heart is superb!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jane. I got lucky and the sun was at a great angle in that area.
DeleteRuffles do not make it better! Ha ha ..so true Mark and Gaz. Well, in my opinion anyway. But good photos Peter once again. These guys seem to be more indoor plant-centric, still a fabulous nursery. I'm going shopping with you next time you're in town.
ReplyDeleteOh, that will be great fun! This is the first time I've been to Portland and not gone to Cistus, which is usually my first destination. It felt a bit strange but I saw Sean and got some of his plants at the show and wanted to see some of the other nurseries that were close to the convention center. Your post about going there with your mom showed some cool plants!
DeleteYou're right, they are very different and both worth visiting. As for that "open 24hrs a day thing"...yes please! Or at least until 10pm. When Andrew and I are out about traveling his book stores are open late but my nurseries and gardens always close up so early.
ReplyDeleteTen p.m. is a good compromise! Just think how many more places we could hit in a day!
DeleteI love the flowers at the top of your post - too bad tulips, crocus and bleeding hearts can't take heat or drought...
ReplyDeleteI'd trade tulips, bleeding hearts, and crocus to be able to grow agave and some of your other great plants in the ground! I guess every climate has it's horticultural trade offs.
DeleteI think you are on to something with the 24 hour nursery--um, wait. That's what the internet is for, us insomniacs. Beautiful photos!
ReplyDeleteThe internet is wonderful but there's something about seeing the plants live and in person that is pretty special!
DeleteThe Portland Nursery looks a lot like your greenhouse!
ReplyDeleteGosh, it'd be swell to have that much greenhouse space! I wouldn't want the heating bill though.
DeletePortland has some outstanding nurseries, doesn't it? I'm going to have to take a trip north and rob a bank on the way. :) Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteIt sure does! We're lucky to live in a region with such a plethora of superior nurseries!
DeleteLove these crocuses and bleeding heart, Peter! I always feel that spring is here when see them blooming.
ReplyDeleteI think this nursery has many plants and you need a lot of willpower to not buy all of them.
Spring has arrived early this year for us. Yes, willpower and not having an limitless budget or space enough to grow them all!
DeleteI seldom make it to the Division St store. Looks like that is a pretty serious oversight on my part.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very red Dicentra! Looks like a fun nursery.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous flowers! And I love the frogs!
