Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Wednesday Vignette: Sorry Grateful

The sight of this beautifully arranged pot of evergreen plants at Swanson's Nursery brought to mind the title of the Stephen Sondheim Song "Sorry Grateful."

On one hand, I'm sorry to see arrangements like this popping up as it's a sure sign that summer is coming to an end; on the other hand, I'm grateful to live, sort of by accident, in this climate where plants like this will be green and beautiful even during the coldest time of year.

Wednesday Vignette is hosted by the one and only Anna at Flutter and Hum.  Click here to join the party.

  2. It needs some pansies. Also, OMG, Sondheim, so hard to sing. Thanks for sharing it, it's one I wasn't familiar with.

  3. You do know your music! Not one I was familiar with but a perfect concept for that container.

  4. There is definitely something wrong with you, the way that plant arrangements keep reminding you of songs and poems and whatnot. ;)

  5. You're sorry-grateful
    Regretful-happy
    Why look for answers
    Where none occur?

Those two guys could be singing about plants. So green, that arrangement! Here everything is brown or grey--even the greens.

  8. I totally get that - you ought to be grateful to live where the winter is mild. Meanwhile, I'm heading into a zone 5 winter, not so much fun.

  9. Yes, I get it too, and I agree. We can actually plant our outside pots for "winter interest" here.

  10. Yes, you are fortunate. I'm trying to prepare myself for the big cool down of fall. I don't mind autumn, but it's sad to think of the end of the growing season.

  12. Not familiar with that song... (will have to Youtube it)... but I love containers like that. I make them all the time to try to - at least temporarily - hide my shrub addiction. Hahahahah!!!
