Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Wednesday Vignette - Car Shopping

After nearly 20 years and over 300,000 miles, Tom's Honda Accord was costing more to keep running than a car payment.  Add to that the lack of A/C and the lake that formed on the floor of the driver's side every time it rained.  It seemed like time to bid adieu to that vehicle.   Looking for something that would get good mileage, was fairly inexpensive,  and would have space for plants should we take his car on a trip the choice came down to these two.

After great deliberation, the Honda Fit was the choice as the back seats fold in such a way that makes quite a bit more space than the shopping cart attachment on the pink model and it's covered so the wind won't ravage exposed plants on the drive home.  Hope he made the right decision.

  1. I was looking at a Fit to replace my Honda and I loved all that space you could get when you put the back seats down. But with our climate I also want four wheel drive which I've never had. Figure it will give me more confidence to get out and about in winter. When I was working I just drove through whatever was happening. But being retired I find myself staying home if it's yucky out. The flooding we've had here killed hundreds if not thousands of cars that need replacing to say nothing of cars on auto lots. So we decided to put off buying since my Honda can go a lot longer.

  2. But he would have looked so cute in the pink model!!!

Andrew watches a lot of car-camping videos, the FIT is a star among that group because of its seat folding, I look forward to its debut as a plant hauler.

    1. The gas mileage of the pink model is fabulous too. Oh well...

  3. 300k is incredible, even for a Honda!. We love our old Element. Be nice to that clean new car, Peter!

    1. Since my Carmen (Elantra) already has a prerequisite coating of potting soil and mulch all over the interior, it'll probably be the primary plantmobile.

  4. The back seats on our Prius fold down too, making lots of room for plants, so I agree that's a great feature. I doubt there's any auto-maker that offers cars in that shade of pink, but it would have been fun! I like the deep shade of blue on the Honda that he chose.

    1. It is a nice color of blue but that pink plastic number was pretty wonderful.

  5. No AC!!! Reason enough alone to get a new car. I suppose the pink model would've offered air conditioning too, if you went really, really fast.

  6. Measure up for a somewhat-oversized piece of pond liner so you can haul as many plants as you can fit without worrying about soil spillage or muddy pots or anything.

    1. Very smart! However, since the interior of my car is already coated with mud, soil, etc. I'll just keep using that for plant outings.

  7. May it end up with 300,000 happy plant shopping miles!

But you know the climate is changing if someone in the neighborhood of Seattle needs A/C.

    1. Pretty amazing about the A/C. Still don't have it in the house but since it's a tall old thing, the heat goes up and out and we really don't need it. A small greenhouse on wheels, on the other hand does need A/C as our summers are getting hotter.

  8. I'll bet you posed that pic just so you could have fun blog fodder and still show off Tom's new car. And since this is a gardening blog, you had to find a way to tie in plants, huh.

    1. Actually, Tom took the picture and sent it to me. It was one of the few available parking spots where ever he was & he was amused by the similarities between his car and the pink one.

  9. That must have been a tough deliberation. ;) A pink plant mobile would have been exciting to see at plant sales. :)

  10. Heck anyone can see the pink one is not near large enough for plant hauling. Since I am going through my blue phase I can honestly say I love that car. Perfect! Here is to 300,000 more miles.

    1. I'm also a fan of blue. We tend to keep cars until they fall apart.

  11. If Aretha can get around in a pink Cadillac why not a pink Fit.
I jus replaced my 17 year old Corolla with a new model. Tis the season for early Xmas presents.

    1. Yea for a new car. Sounds like you keep cars for a long time as well. It's always nice to have a reliable car but difficult to spend money on one that could be used to buy plants:)

  12. I think you could have gone for both! I guess the pink wouldn't quite fit in the blue, but ... close. Enjoy your new car!
