Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

In a Vase on Monday - A Little Punchy

After the first few days of school, teaching evening classes, visiting plant sales/nurseries on Saturday,  work on Sunday followed by a delightful garden visit, I was feeling a little punchy.  The perfect vessel for such a Sunday had been sitting around for a few weeks.

Punch bowls have always fascinated me so when this diminutive (est. three or four quarts) pressed glass number showed up at  a thrift store for a couple of dollars, it hopped into my cart for an IaVoM post.  In my family, when my eldest sister's  punch bowl came off of the high shelf, it meant that a special event was in the works.  Interestingly, punch was the forerunner of our current single-glass cocktail. Interesting article here. Our family didn't drink alcohol so punch was usually a sweet and fruity concoction.  My favorites usually included those that included sherbet or ice cream.

The colors of this Kalanchoe blooming in the greenhouse suggested sherbet.

The colors echo  Billbergia 'Fantasia' which came home from the Odd Plant Show and Sale on Saturday.

Throw in a tillandsia and we've got a celebration of the last few days of Summer.

What's a celebration without a little music.  Ella's rendition of  "September Song" is perfect for a cocktail party!

My garden guests kindly brought a bottle of wine which makes any gathering even more fun, no?
Thanks for coming over and to participate in this progressive event, click here to visit the blog of our host, Cathy at Rambling in the Garden to see her vase and to find links to those of others.

  1. Though I don't own one, I love punch bowls and look at them at 2nd-hand shops all the time. That Kalanchoe is fabulous with the Fantasia foliage. A perfect party punch planting.

  4. I don't own a punch bowl, but coming also from teetotaling parents, I too have fond memories of drinking from one at special events. That Bilbergia is rather awesome, and the Kalanchoe flowers pair so well with it in that punch bowl.

  5. I love the idea of an Odd Plant Show and Sale, Peter! The kalanchoe, tillandsia and bilbergia work so well together and definitely make a punchy arrangment

  6. I love this arrangement, Peter! Kalanchoe, or at least the heavy-flowering varieties Debra Lee Baldwin describes as "supermarket succulents", don't get the respect they deserve. The flower color of this one is wonderful, as is your new Billbergia.

  7. I would not have realized that bowl was actually a punch bowl it's so little. Love your arrangement!
