Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

What in hail happened here?

Let me just start off by saying that I'm not complaining about the weather in the Pacific Northwest!  We are very lucky and I'm truly sorry for everyone suffering with high heat and drought right now.

In the wee hours of the morning of July 9,  Tacoma was hit with an unpredicted lightening storm which brought with it marble-sized  hail which is huge by local standards!  Living in an area that seldom gets hail at all, I didn't even think about the garden until I walked outside and saw some of the storms effects on my plants.

Of course the big-leafed plants sustained some damage but in most cases, not a whole lot more than a big slug could do in an afternoon.

Did any of your gardens get pelted?

  1. Damn hail! We got hit by it back in June, so thick on the ground it looked like snow. Of course we were out of town so I only know this because a neighbor sent me a picture. When we got home the damage was obvious on some of the succulents with pitting and discoloring on their fleshy leaves. Did your succulents escape such a fate?

  2. I haven't seen pitting but there were a few holes all the way through some of them. The hail was pretty big.

  3. darn the hail!!!!! We were really lucky and dodged the hail bullet but we got crazy wind. It looked like a hurricane came through town. In fact I almost died ... no joke. I was approaching a highway exit when a tree fell onto the road two cars in front of me. Luckily everyone slammed on their breaks in time PHEW! it was kind of crazy though.

  4. I don't think we had hail that night, but we might have. I know we've had some spectacular thunder storms lately. There was one just last night in fact. A lot of my too-tall shasta daisies are flopping all over this morning.

    1. Pretty unusual all this rain in July. I am grateful, though because it cuts down on the use of my sophisticated irrigation system (a hose I drag around to all the pots and newly planted areas.)
