Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

The Sun Came Out

On Tuesday, school was cancelled again even though the snow had stopped falling.  The clouds cleared  and the sun began to warm things a bit, not much above freezing.  With no sand on many streets, things remained pretty slippery.

Tis doesn't happen often here.

The light and fluffy snow remains in many places and predictions of another snow event today and Saturday are not good news.

We'll see if we get another dose of the white stuff.

Agave 'Mr. Ripple' may not make it through this.

Chimonanthus praecox doesn't seem to mind but maybe the blooms are just frozen in place.

'Chief Joseph' looks quite fetching wearing winter white.

Well, at least part of my garden is still in zone 9.

Time to leave the greenhouse and go out to face the frozen world again.

Someone loves this weather but it sure ain't me.
It'll be interesting to see which plants perish and which survive this cold snap.  Have a good weekend all!

  2. Grrrr! It ain't me either. I've been spending a few hours each day in the greenhouse sowing seeds. There are some that actually prefer a period of freezing, so I've been putting a few pots out in the cold, covered in bins, to freeze. Of the ones that only need warmth to sprout, I have tiny seedlings inside the greenhouse already though. I kind of wish I could sleep out there, it smells so good and lifts my spirits. I've been so grumpy lately.

  3. Snow makes pretty pictures but, to a gardener, I guess saying that is equivalent to saying raccoons and rabbits are cute. I hope Mother Nature goes easy on you.

  4. It is shocking to see that much snow on your plants! Nerve wracking. We had freezing rain and all my garden is glittering because it is so cold nothing is melting — even with the sun.

  5. Very pretty shots. I really like the two icicle photos!

  6. With a greenhouse like yours I would just move in for the winter. Luckily you have a way to get your plant 'fix' when the weather tanks.

  7. Sun is a good way to begin the weekend. I hope the snow protects your plants from the coming cold. We are facing single digit temps again. This winter is a doozy.

  8. What a difference between your snow covered plants and the ones inside your greenhouse. Do you have heating in the greenhouse? May you not get too much more snow.

Have a nice weekend and, thank you for your kind comments on my blog dear Peter. ~ FlowerLady

  9. I hope your agave will survive, Peter! I covered mine (they are all in pots) with some thin cloth and took a couple of little ones into the garage.
Yes, the look of winter is beautiful, but we just need o n e look at it!
    Stay warm!

  11. As I read this post, we have been dumped on again, about 4 inches so far this evening. More to come? I think tomorrow I'll build a snowman. Kids gotta play in snow.

  13. From what I see online your round two of the white stuff is happening, here’s hoping it’s not too crazy and your plants surprise you. We’ve got the warmest temps we’ve had all week at this time, and rain falling. It’s freaky and not what was predicted.

  14. What gorgeous stained glass you have! I hope all of your plants make it through! This has been a very strange winter. You must have gotten all of our snow. We've had very little snow here in Massachusetts this winter, even though we've had the low temps. Instead, it just warms up and rains before freezing again, a different kind of havoc for plants.

  15. Oh dear, I glanced at your past few posts and see that you've had quite a week. It is beautiful, as you say, but when you plant and plan for zone 8 or 9, it's horrible to be plunged to zone 6 or so. We had a touch of zone 4a or 4b, and I was thinking (based on recent winters) that maybe I could cheat to zone 6. Nope. I'll be curious to find out which plants survived two nights of -20F to -28F. And then our recent ice storm. Your stained glass is amazing!

  16. Ah, blue sky and the sun streaming through your beautiful stained glass! Must have been wonderfully reviving.

  17. We've had a lot of snow days this year and have another one tomorrow thanks to ice. I'll take them! I have over 50 pots of seedlings under lights in my basement that I affectionately refer to as my pot farm, especially since pot is illegal in VA. Maybe I should finally put up a blog post about it and see if the cops show up.... LOL!
