Scadoxus puniceus has started blooming in the greenhouse. This is it's third year of living with me and it's making a nice clump. This year, there are five blooms.
They look a bit like exploding fireworks or pompoms.
How long do their blooms last?
ReplyDeleteThey're slow to fully open so they last for about a month but the blooms are replaced by equally nice red fruit that persists until the plant goes dormant in autumn. It's supposedly hardy here if given sharp drainage in the winter.
DeleteOoh, those are fantastic! I have one in the ground. Right now, it's just a tiny nubbin pushing forth, but at least it's alive. Now, I know what to aim for, but I bet I have to move to a sunnier spot in order for it to flower. Looks like it would be worth the effort!
ReplyDeleteGood to know that yours made it through the winter in the ground. I keep threatening to move mine outside as the plant becomes huge and takes up a lot of space in the greenhouse. I'm not sure how much sun it needs to bloom as mine is in a rather shady spot in the greenhouse and still does well.
DeleteThat is one gorgeous flower. Fireworks for sure.
ReplyDeleteOkay that's it. I'm trying this one again.
ReplyDeleteThis is one reason why I enjoy reading your blog. I am introduced to plants that I have never heard of and they have gorgeous blooms.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool flower! It does look exactly like fireworks.
ReplyDeleteAnother cool plant I've never heard of!
ReplyDeleteLike Kris said, another cool plant I know nothing about. Are the a bulb of tuber or what?
ReplyDeleteIt's a bulb and I see that Michigan Bulb Company sells them, there is an etsy shop that offers them, and Rare Plant Research in Oregon City always has them. Sometimes called Haemanthus or African Blood Lilly.
