Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

A Day With Alison (The First)

You may be familiar with my friend, Alison, of Bonney Lassie fame.  The first Alison in my life is my eldest niece who I don't get to see very often as we live a couple of thousand miles apart.  We're spending a week together, a gift to us both from her mother.  (Too bad it didn't come with a return receipt:)   Come join us for a little shopping fun!

We shopped the day away but didn't think of taking pictures until we hit Trader Joe's and I saw these fun offerings.

For those who wish they had a greenhouse - poof, your wish is granted.

Kalanchoe delagoensis (Mother of Thousands) and Aeoniums.  Watch for a special Aeonium post soon!

We are both very fond of shopping and of stuff!

I'll admit that I like nice-looking silk flower arrangements (saves a lot of watering and clean-up time) and realistic cacti and succulents can fit nicely into spaces where other plant life won't thrive.  This one, for example, would look great in the right context.

These make it hard to picture a flattering setting.  Oscar the Grouch has a place all picked out.

Neither Alison nor I is fond of misused apostrophes.  Don't be dangling your participle around us either!

Having too often felt powerless, Alison is now armed with a defensive weapon.

Looks like she needs to add a Sharpie to her arsenal!

To make matters worse, there wasn't a knife to be found in the box.

On a lighter note (see what she, who's writing this over my shoulder, did there?)  This interactive hanging light fixture at Ikea blew our minds, what's left of them.  See the two spherical pulls dangling from the bottom?  Pull one and the exterior is a solid sphere, pull the other and the Death Star explodes.

Serious lust!
I hope you have an equally entertaining day!

  1. One of my nieces who I rarely get to see is coming for a visit at the end of the month. Hope we have as much fun as it looks like the two of you were having. Love her word correction!

  2. Fun day! (I know Knife and he's not going to be happy that you messed with his box of KitchenAid doodads!) Inspired by those lamps...

  3. It's so cool that you are getting such a treat, and that you get to have so much fun with your niece. My nieces are all raising little kids and won't be invading my home any time soon, and of course, their kids barely know me since I moved away. Maybe I should put an ad on craigslist for a surrogate. Those lamps are pretty cool.

  4. Good thing Alison is on the job since it's not easy to get good help these days! The Weird Al grammar song is great and I'd not seen it before. Misuse of further and farther is tops on my list along with the word crimes you already mentioned.

Took me a minute to figure out that was Tuesday Morning where you were having too much fun. Have fun the rest of your time together.

  5. Alison did what many shoppers have probably been tempted to do! I love that lamp too. I wonder if it's available on-line, not that I've anywhere to put one...

  6. Those lights are so cool. I shall also be looking online. I need something just like that for our current project. Especially as I'm told I can't have a dimmer. So, a light that dims itself!

  7. Weird Al is a favorite around our house, and we all enjoy that particular ditty. He's a creative genius. Anyway, you and your niece have made the world a better place by correcting the display, even if the contents didn't match. Back to the plants and the shopping: It sounds like you had a wonderful visit together! Yay!

  8. I think I would have a lot of fun going shopping with you two, and I'm not fond of shopping!

  9. As Alan said, maybe the box of doodads was Knife's collection of things to put away in their proper home? My husband has dyslexia, so sadly he doesn't understand my outrage at silly misspellings. (And my dismay at finding them in correspondence from professionals I'm supposed to trust, including my son's English teacher.) Looks like you're having a wonderful time!

  10. I wonder what other descriptive phrases get added to "favorite uncle"?

  11. Lovely to spend time with your niece. I have just had mine to stay for a week and enjoyed it so much. I took her to a succulent nursery and as they are her new passion, she was like a kid in a toyshop. Ok, I quite enjoyed it too.
