Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Now You See Them, Now You Don't!

Do you notice anything missing from this picture?  Do you see the three rings on the right side of the steps where, oh I don't know, maybe plant pots were sitting?

A little grumpy this evening because between 3:00p.m. and 6:00 p.m. while we were home, a thief decided to take my three Agave parryi 'J.C.Raulston'  from our front steps.  I'd been happy that they had made it unmolested this long and just figured that maybe folks in this area didn't like them or something.

Here they were last year when I'd just re potted them from their nursery pots.  It surprised me that they'd put on some growth and were nearly covering the gravel mulch.

Oh well, they were sweet while they lasted.  Of course it would be swell if they magically reappeared as they looked welcoming on the steps and echoed the form of the Agave ovatifolia.

One wouldn't want to have a post be entirely upsetting so here are a couple of things that have made me smile recemtly:

The new leaves of this Schefflera delavayi are all nicely incised, a nice contrast to my other S. delavayi that has very smooth edges.

The topiary trees by the back steps still look good there even when the brugmansias came outside to join them.
 Happy gardening everyone!

  1. Grrrrr....why why why? You have a calm attitude about it, Peter, so good for you. At least the other agave in the ground is left untouched! And your Schefflera is also wonderful. Good to focus on the positive. Maybe they will reappear magically. Put up some posters around the hood! Missing: Three lonely agaves.

    1. I was lucky (actually surprised) that they stayed as long as they did. Funny you should mention putting up posters as I posted on our Nextdoor site.

  2. that's a lot to carry away, too much for one person. I'm thinking there's an agave-rustling gang afoot. What utter bastards.

  3. Your attitude towards being robbed is admirable and I'm glad you're on the positive... but I can't help but wonder who steals multiple pots of agaves? I would guess it's to resell at a flea market or something but it's still a crappy thing to do.
The back steps look great though, love the throne :)

  4. Damn! I agree with Denise, multiple Agave thieves working together...complete and utter bastards. I know, and hate, that feeling of looking around and wondering what's next? Once one (or three) things disappear it feels like everything is up for grabs. I am sorry.

(and beautiful Schefflera leaves, poor thing shouldn't be over shadowed by the bastardly act)

  5. One can only hope whoever took the Agaves gets bloodied good and hard. The Schefflera leaves are beautiful, glad you found something lovely to focus on. It's hard to get over that feeling of being violated.

  6. Jerks. At least you didn't find them smashed in the street around the corner. Plant envy goes too far sometimes.

  7. Sad. Kids? I suspect you're a bit calmer in the post than you felt at the time.

  8. Oh man, that is infuriating. I am so sorry.

  9. Creeps! I hope karma delivers what the thief or thieves deserve.

  10. Denise is right. I'm crossing my fingers that your agaves are returned unharmed and possibly with photographs of their adventures. You are wise to focus on those beautiful schefflera leaves.

  11. This is so annoying! How low; stealing pots off someones porch. I'm disgusted and no pictures of Schefflera or topiary can make this better. Maybe by your next post I'll calm down.

  12. Ouch! It hurts! It's beyond my understanding - how someone can enjoy those plants while knowing that they were stolen. Probably, the thieves will sell them. I am so sorry, Peter! I remember how bad I felt myself when someone took my little snail from our front yard. Fortunately, it was returned to me. That was only one thing, and you lost three...
I have a smooth-edged Schefflera d. Yours looks very attractive!

  13. Theft seems to be all too common anymore. I suppose someone realized that your easily removed potted plants had some monetary value. I hate it that nothing is sacred.

  14. What a disgusting thing to do, I hope they suffered from the spines, they deserve to! Maybe lead weights at the bottom of each pot is the answer or you'll have to chain them up in future!

  15. That's just awful. They where such nice plants. Even in my neighborhood with large setbacks and no sidewalks we keep portable plants hidden from passersby.

  17. Little did they know that they were stealing from "The Outlaw". Let them think that you are watching old Clint Eastwood movies and plotting your revenge. Oh, but even Clint baby realized, late in life, the futility of violence.
