Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Another Sunday Afternoon at Sterino's

Many Sunday afternoons after work, we stop by Sterino's Produce Stand to get produce for the week. There is always something on sale for a great price and for the last couple of weeks, all pumpkins have been ninety- nine cents each regardless of size so we had to go!  Pumpkins look great through Thanksgiving!

I was also thrilled to find gourds for fifty cents each and just picked cabbage at three for a dollar!

Did I mention cauliflower for fifty cents a head?   Notice that huge truck on the right?  Full of more pumpkins!

I forgot both my phone and camera so Tom took these pictures with his phone.  Saturday was very busy with hauling furniture out to the greenhouse. I even got some bulbs planted between showers!  Today we decided to string lights on the tops of  the trusses and only got partway done before dark.
I picked up a smallish pumpkin for soup and also picked up some other squash (fifty cents a piece) and a bunch of root vegetables to make another soup.  Summer is definitely not lingering this year (where did it go?) so hearty soups will be on the menu in many households I'm guessing.

These fellows have pumpkin seed packets in their pockets so they must have planted all of these.

They're still smiling after all that work.

Wishing you a week as happy as these scarecrows look!

  1. Those prices -- wow! My house would be full of pies and soups, and I'd make sure every one of my neighbors had a jack-o-lantern. :)

    1. They really want people to haul those pumpkins out of there before they start getting ready for Christmas! The prices are fabulous and I hope that people get lots of them to enjoy!

    1. There are lots of pumpkin growers in this area and lots of pumpkin patches but the sale here is pretty incredible. The greenhouse is still in process and I still have to pinch myself to see if I'm dreaming every time I walk out there.

    1. It's a great thing to do on the way home on Sunday. We're usually hungry and all of that great produce seems even more appealing so we load up on fruits and veggies!

  6. All that happy orange and the prices are a steal! What happens to the pumpkins left over after Halloween? I made Butternut squash soup this weekend. On Wednesday there may be a small window of opportunity for planting bulbs...

    1. I've heard that some places send them to zoos for the animals to eat. Some get tilled back into the soil. I'm not sure what the really big growers/retailers do with them. Hooray for bulb planting weather! Today was pretty sweet but that whole J-O-B thing keeps getting in the way of my fun!

  8. Great pumpkins! Great prices! We don't get deals like that around here although I did see some marked down Talavera pumpkins today.

Very nice place but we are partial to Sweet Potato Pie around these parts....yum...

  9. Wow, 99 cents for any pumpkin! That's a steal! Sounds like the other produce is inexpensive, too. And it looks like a fun farm stand and crowd of fellow shoppers. This post made me smile. :)

  10. I've never seen so many pumpkins in my life. With all those choices I'd be there for hours trying to pick the ones I want!

  11. More fun and cheaper than growing your own...though cabbages can be gorgeous ornamentals. Pity the poor person who gets a craving for pumpkin after Halloween. The growers are good at disappearing them right after the big day.
