Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Glad to Bid Farewell to March!

The Seattle area has had the wettest March on record with nearly nine inches of rain falling this month. How wet is it you may ask.  It's so wet that there's a duck swimming on the lawn near Watson's nursery.  (Do you see the duck at the top of the light reflection in the water right beneath the green area.  This is not a water feature.

These are raised beds. Hmmm.

This higher area is much drier but you may not wish to use the brick path right now.  Although, it might be fun to pull on your Wellies and do a little wading.

So, what's a gardener to do when the rain is coming down nearly constantly on the weekend?  Laugh about it of course and hope that the weather in a couple of weeks (my spring break) will be sunny and warm!

I'm not a fan of bumper stickers on cars.  You express something which makes some people in traffic happy and the others angry, don't change anyone's mind about anything, and cause people to rear end you to read the fine print.  The exception proves the rule and one that says, "If your thoughts can be expressed on a bumper, maybe you should think more." made me laugh out loud.  I love to post pithy sayings around my house.   Here are three spotted at Watson's Nursery that helped me forget all of the garden projects that the rain is keeping me from doing:

I'm not lactose intolerant, am able to consume gluten, and have never had problems with allergies until now.  Beware, I hear this is on the rise!

Years of analysis have yielded the following realization:

My neighbor is building a large boat and recently animals have been showing up in pairs.  What have you been doing to keep yourself sane in the midst of your drought, winter that won't end,  or nearly endless rain?

  1. I've been sowing seeds out in my greenhouse to keep sane! The rain has been pretty crazy, even for here. I was out yesterday, even though it was sprinkling. But we're about to get three dryish days in a row. I'm actually nearly caught up on weeding and cutting back. I love all three of those wonderful wooden plaques. I don't like bumper stickers either.

    1. Leave it to you to do something seedy! Going to mow the lawn and maybe do a little weeding or planting today after work. Hooray for sun.

  2. What have I been doing? Counting sun rays, as I plot to build a private pipeline from the PNW to El Paso, and then I can get rich selling your abundance!

    1. Now, what is this sun thing of which you speek? Your pipeline idea is a great one!

  3. I gave up and gardened in the sprinkles on Saturday. After Friday's deluge the rain that did fall on Saturday was ignorable. Although I got strange looks from passers by...

    1. Sometimes a gardener's got to do what a gardener's got to do! Hope you got lots done!

  4. I went to see Noah. Misery loves company, right? One particularly rainy scene I could have sworn was film in Seattle. And although the movie was only loosely based on the original (I fact-checked), Russell Crow is always satisfying. Then, lo and behold, Sunday cleared up. I waddled in the garden with my rubber boots on, discovered my Bleeding Hearts flowering and Tulips ready to pop. Who says miracles don't happen?

    1. Plants amaze me with their plucky nature. Outside growing and blooming their heads off while I'm too much of a wimp to go out and appreciate them!

  5. Why, oh why, can't Mother Nature redirect some of that rain down into SoCal? The forecasters are currently predicting that we "may" get 1/2 inch between tonight and Wednesday from only the 3rd "rain event" this season.

    1. I'm sorry about your drought! This must be very frustrating! You are more than welcome to as much of our rain as you'd like to take!

  6. Raised beds with water but not a pond, hmmm, quite alarming! Hopefully next weekend will be much drier for you guys and more conducive to gardening, cross fingers!

    1. We're elated that there are three dry days in a row forecast during the week. I'll be able to rush home after work and do some tasks. The rain returns by the weekend. Sigh...

  7. Sorry to hear about your endless rain. I don't like to gloat but it has been mild and pleasant here for days and I have gardened until I can't straighten myself out. I' m sitting down now and the only way to get out of my chair is to roll. Goodness knows how I will get upstairs. You have all this to come when it stops raining. Or do you have the sense to stop before you get to this stage of paralysis?

    1. I've no sense whatsoever and when the weather allows, I work to get things done. Crazy! Take care of yourself! A nice long warm bath is just what you need!

  8. There have got to be better ways to get on national television.
Richard was recuperating after having his wisdom teeth pulled so we built a big fire and I read James Patterson's latest thriller aloud: a thoroughly decadent weekend with absolutely no guilt.

  9. We just had a lovely day that got me outside for a walk and a bit of gardening. The rain will return, and since I can't do much gardening yet anyway, I decided to write my memoirs. I work on it a little bit each day, and it gives me something to think about while I'm walking between rain squalls.

  10. I have a high tolerance for precipitation (let's make soup!) but last weekend nearly drove me insane. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for sprinkles from here on out.

    1. I hear that this Saturday is going to be "a soaker" here. However my spring break is next week and there are at least three week days with sun and highs in the upper 60's. Hooray.

  11. Hahaha, those sentences are so funny!
When I cant garden because of the cold and rain, wich is very often, I go out to the countryside and see waterfalls or other things in the landscape that make me happy.
