Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Wordless Wednesday - Different Autumn Color
My entire knowledge about orchids can be summed up in three words: They Are Pretty. Oops, one new learning, some of them smell nice.
I'm always fascinated by the endless variety of Orchids...such a fabulously interesting plant. I was watching a show on them years ago, and they were talking about just how specialized some of them are...that the form of their blooms had evolved to be pollinated by exactly 1 kind of insect...it was physically designed just for them...amazing!
Cool! I look forward to learning more about Orchids. I've always dismissed them as being too temperamental for me but some of them seem to be pretty tough. Only problem is that many of them aren't particularly lovely when not in bloom.
For some reason I've never got the Orchid "bug"...as in I just don't understand the appeal. I guess that's a good thing because I hardly need another plant passion (obsession) right? So are these all part of your new collection?
No, these were all part of a new shipment at Watson's. Orchids aren't gong to become a passion or collection (they don't grow outside!) but I got one as a gift earlier this year and the blooms lasted a very long time. They probably look really cool growing in their native habitat.
I was sure that first photo was of a pansy until I looked closer. Outstanding photos. They're all absolutely delicious but the shell pink one in the 4th photo down... ooh, la, la!
A beautiful selection of orchids there, I especially love those Miltoniopsis. I have sadly, recently lost most of my orchid collection due to bringing home a plant with mealy bugs that I didn't isolate long enough.... Grrrr...
There you go with that fancy word for them thar pansy-faced orchidy thingies. Sorry about the loss of most of your collection. That must be very frustrating!
I LOOOOVE orchids but am no orchid whisperer. I always consider taking the orchid plunge and likely getting obsessed... and then I buy some foliage plant that will work out much better under my care.
You should start a collection! In the last ten years or so, it seems like they are showing up everywhere. Even grocery stores have them. It's a message that they should come home with you!
Gorgeous! We don't have a lot of "seasonal color" rules here in San Antonio so those bright colors work all the time.
ReplyDeleteWe don't really have rules here either; it comes down to what colors we have around at the time.

DeletePlus, they aren't dangerous at all! Nice and polite soft-leaved things - who needs that?
DeleteSuch beautiful colours and patterns, orchids are the candy of flowers :)
ReplyDeleteI always admire them in stores but since I kill house plants, they always stay there.

ReplyDeleteThe flowers of that one and the yellow one above were so waxy-looking. Almost looked fake.
DeleteSome of them have funny faces!
ReplyDeleteThey do!

DeleteThose are beautiful! I received one a month ago and hoping I can keep it alive.
ReplyDeleteGood luck! I haven't killed mine yet and it's been four months so far.
DeleteBeautiful! I haven't ever had any orchids. I fear that I can't take care of them.
ReplyDeleteI've heard that some of them aren't as difficult to grow as others.
