Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Out of my Tree! Ideas?

My attic, garage, basement, well the whole house  is full of stuff that's just too good to throw away, supplies for future projects, plant pots, etc.  You name the worthless junk and you'll probably find it somewhere around here.  I have enablers and every now and then, I'll find special gifts on my front porch from my friend Florence.  A weke ago, these showed up:
They're  Chinese jade trees  which at one time looked similar to the one in the image below that I borrowed from Ebay.  Florence's husband, Howard, has tons of these stored away as he imported Chinese antiques for years.  They have fallen out of favor a little bit and the carved stone and glass leaves,  flower petals and berries make great objects to include in mosaic and other glass projects so they are cut off leaving these pots with bare trunks and branches.

In a conversation, I mentioned to Florence that I thought the two of them were interesting.  Somehow they multiplied after I mentioned that.

Please save them from a trip to my attic where they'll most likely be forgotten and help me think of something fun to do with them.  I was thinking maybe tiny Tillandsias wired to the branches or maybe ornaments of some sort.  What would you do (besides throwing them away?)
(How's this for a segue to try and make it o.k. to post a totally random picture at the end of the post?)
Speaking of the attic, I was up there recently and saw the fall colors of my Liriodendron tulipifera and thought it was kind of interesting viewed through the attic window.  Blurred, it almost looks like a large piece of multi - colored glass in the middle.

  1. Funny enough before you had the chance to say it Tillandsia was the first plant that popped into my head. What about small orchids? Love the stained glass pic with a view of the tulip tree btw!

  2. I agree; Tillandsia would look very cool on the trees I think! And that stained glass window is very beautiful!

    1. I'll have to try making one and see what it looks like. Maybe they could become gifts. Hmmm.

  3. Great shot from the attic!

I see you personalizing these trees somehow with your own glass creations plus a few Tillandsia...then of course selling them to Flora Grubb and getting stinking rich!

    1. Because we've lived so long in our poor neglected old house I tend to overlook or take for granted the really cool elements.

I like the stinking rich thing but fear it would require a much larger volume of these that I could turn out and that work (a four-letter word) thing. I hadn't looked at Flora Grubb's online store before. There are some great ideas of stuff to make there.

    1. It is full of fun stuff. Just the other day I went up there and found stuff that I hadn't even thought about for years. I made the windows to resemble the original ones that we saw in old pictures of our house.

    1. Yea! Thanks Deanne. I thought of you yesterday while walking in the park, camera in hand. I took some pictures of the mallard ducks in the pond and wished that I had brought my telephoto lens along. It was a WWDD (What Would Deanne Do) moment.

  6. Definitely tillandsias. It has an adams family kind of charm. That kind of speaks to me.

    1. Tillandsias seem to be the consensus. I'll have to try it and post the result sometime.

  7. Somehow there's so much stuff in our garage as well... Those leaves in the middle of that glass frame are like a part of the glass painting. Have a great weekend!

    1. I think that the stuff reproduces when we're not looking.
Thanks Satu! Happy weekend to you too.

    1. Hadn't thought of that but it's a great idea! Maybe lots of little birds or something?
