Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Wednesday Vignette: Hail and Fairwell

You may remember Lavonne's garden from this post in October.  Her garden was on a fall color tour and her friend Camille, whose garden was also on the tour, arranged for me to see the gardens the week before the tour.  I was treated to a private tour of this garden by It's creator, LavonneStewart-Campbell.

Camille shared  the news that her friend and fellow gardener, Lavonne passed away a few days ago. I only met Lavonne that one day but we kept in touch through occasional emails.  It was obvious that this great lady was a fine gardener and  fellow plant lover.

The garden was scheduled to be open for a Northwest Perennial Alliance tour later this month. Imagine Lavonne wandering this huge space gardening, preparing to once again share her Eden with lucky visitors.  Her legacy of this peaceful and mature garden will live on and celebrate a gardener who made the world a more beautiful place.

Hail and Farewell to Lavonne, a stellar gardener and delightful person.

  1. What a lovely tribute. I always hope that when my time comes, I will still be living here with my garden. Such a daily comfort to be surrounded by a garden.

  2. Oh, how sad.... but what a wonderful place to come to rest in. I'm glad you got to make her acquaintance , and got to enjoy her life's and heart's work. Lovely photos, Peter! I do hope they keep the garden open for posterity, or at least that a true gardener moves in who will appreciate all she did.

    1. I just heard from Camille that Mick, Lavonne's husband, is planning on opening the garden for the May tour as planned. He's also a gardener who will, most likely continue living in the garden for years to come.

  3. In honor of Lavonne, I revisited your post from October. Her garden is after my own heart. I remembered the exquisite stone lantern and I still wish I had one just like it. I wonder if it would still be part of the tour this year.

    1. Her husband is also a gardener but the passion was really Lavonne's. Everyone hopes he'll continue to live in and love the garden for years.
