Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

What Next?

At the top of a back staircase in our house this variegated sansevieria has lived for the last five years, requiring little care and growing happily.

A year or two ago, I decided to let it have a vacation outside.

However, it got placed in a spot with a little too much light and wasn't acclimated properly so it suffered.  I brought it in after only a few days, mad at myself for such foolishness.  During the last year or so it's struggled a bit and something that found the pot outside ate a few dents in the sides of a couple of leaves.  Maybe it got over watered but recently it decided to fall apart.

What to do?  Is it time to call it quits and compost the whole thing or should the fallen bits be rooted, fresh soil provided and hope that the fun continues?   I've pondered this for a while.

This spring, I was feeling a little blah and wasn't really enjoying being in the garden or even going to nurseries.   The amount of plants in my possession and the care they require seemed overwhelming.  Everything that I thought of to blog about seemed old - yes, there are new shoots, blooms, foliage but what haven't I already shared in previous years?  Blogging and being part of that community have been a true joy for me but recently, the thought of what to do next on the blog has been crossing my mind every time I look at that sansevieria.

I now know that a totally blocked vessel in my heart may have had something to do with my feeling of ennui.   The signs were fairly subtle and I dismissed the pain as being caused by moving too many pots out of the greenhouse.  Finally on Saturday evening, we walked  to the emergency room of the hospital just up the street.  I got a lovely private room in the coronary care unit with a view of the park.  A couple of days being pampered  and a nice surgery were just what the doctor ordered, literally.   I'm back home now and feeling much better than before but will be taking a break from blogging for a short time.  Until then, happy spring and happy gardening!

  4. It's time for your plants to pamper you. Rest, relax and recuperate while the plants provide you with some joy but will do just fine with a little tough love for the moment. Speedy recovery!

  7. I was frankly worried by your silence and tempted to contact a couple of people closer geographically with inquiries but that seemed intrusive. I was relieved when I saw a couple of comments from you but still concerned. I'm very glad to hear that you got the care you needed and that you're recovering. I'd hoped you were on vacation but I didn't imagine one of exactly this type!

  10. OMG Peter.... what a scare! I'm so glad you got to it on time, and that you're on the mend. I hope you have a wonderful, restorative, and restful few weeks at home, where you can take in all the spring bounty with no other worries than watching the hummingbirds fight over it. 13. And here I thought you were just on vacation! My sister recently had a similar experience. So glad you got fixed up and are taking it easy. We can't have you falling apart like your poor potted plant.

  14. A room with a park view & people to bring your meals. If it weren't for the surgery part, it sounds like a really nice change of pace! Even from Texas I could tell your heart wasn't really in your nursery visit posts, which is unusual, & now we see that your heart needed some attention of its own. So glad you got to that exactly when you did. Very smart! Rest up & be well soon. Good thoughts coming your way ...

  16. It must be heartening to see so many good wishes for your full recovery here from your followers. I join in with them in hoping that you are back in fine fettle soon. But of course if you are still feeling slothful, there's nothing wrong with that either. Take care of yourself, there's only one of you and you're it.

  24. Here I am, outside the United States on vacation, and this is the first opportunity to check my oldest and favorite garden blog, and here you are, going through all this medical emergency and trauma. My heart goes out to you, Peter: I pray for your quick recovery. I sure hope you'll get your mojo back soon. I'll be back state side at the end of April. If you need any kind of gardening assistance, don't hesitate: I love working in other people's gardens. Good health and quick recovery to you my friend!
P.S. the Sansevieria can be saved. Any part of the leaf can start rooting, with a little patience.

  26. Oh Peter I've only just picked up on this post. I thought that you were quiet. I'm too far away to offer any help, even if you trusted me to weed your garden, but you will be in my thoughts. I hope that the joys of spring and a good rest sees you fully restored and ready to resume nursery visiting with enthusiasm again. Take care.

  29. Hi Peter! I learned the 'hearty'news from Alison last Saturday during my Open Garden. I haven't blog and haven't visited my favorite blogs for several months due to some house remodeling, garden restoring after the February snow and the preparation for the Open Garden. I was shocked and very sorry to hear the news, but I'm glad to know that you are doing fine and back to work. Take a good break and come back to the blogging world - even one post a month will be great! All The Best!

  41. Thanks, Chava, I hope your fourth was fabulous. Actually, I never felt weak after the surgery and thought it was silly to stay home for the week that the Dr. recommended. All is well and I'm enjoying playing in my garden. Hope you are doing the same. Went to Swanson's a week or so and thought of you as we drove past your street.
