Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

In a Vase on Monday

Looks like we're going to make it as the vernal equinox is only a few days away.  Fragrances of late winter blooms fill the garden and the magic of  earth's rebirth is afoot!  We've had gale-force winds, pounding rain, hail, and a few minutes of sun for the last couple of days.  Actually, that pretty much sums up the weather we've had since March came roaring in like a lion.  Still blooms abound, spring garden chores become legion, and gardeners venture outside once more.

I had plans for a blue and gold arrangement and found this glued-together goblet to use as a vase.

Blue hyacinths were begging to come inside and perfume the kitchen and I was going to pair them with daffodils but then saw Kerria japonica 'Pleniflora' in bloom and decided to use them instead. Not being able to simply use the two colors, I grabbed a chunk of Helleborus argutifolius and trrew in a mauve hellebore from last week's arrangement.

The glass spheres represent the magic of spring arriving in the northern hemisphere.

  1. Definitely dramatic! I am dreaming of the day when there is more than a few snowdrops in the garden on a Monday.

  3. I'm surprised how wonderful the green flowers look with the hyacinth. The Helleborus argutifolius took the leading roll while the Kerria became an accent touch. A happy accident?
My purple hyacinth are massive this year; A delight inside and outside the house.

  4. Your roaring lion is a gentle lamb here but we did get a good solid soaking last week and we have drizzle this morning, all courtesy of storms originating from the north, I think. Your gorgeous glass spheres make this week's arrangement for me, perfectly picking up the energy and drama of those blue hyacinths and green hellebores! I can only imagine the scent.

  6. Oh those spheres are spot-on to accompany the vase, both in shape and colour - such a good pairing for the sharpness of colour of blooms. Thnaks for sharing your creativity Peter

  7. Those colors are positively electric and the way the Hyacinths gently arch gives the whole thing a kind of musical quality. Well done!

  8. Beautiful! I love yellow and blue together. It's just as well that you did not use daffodils, because it is my understanding that combining other flowers with daffodils causes the other flowers to wilt.

  9. I was trying to imagine the assembled flowers in a vase, but your vase surpassed my expectations, you really have a great arranging style, Peter. I like blue-purple and yellow, together, but the addition of aqua really makes it pop.

  10. Nice arrangement Peter. I love hyacinth in any way, and they go well with green hellebore.
