Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Wednesday Vignette - Pretty In Pink!

Each Wednesday, Anna at Flutter and Hum hosts Wednesday Vignette (Not so wordless Wednesday.) One of the things that caught my eye this week is this new Geranium (Pelargonium, not Cranesbill) called Pelargonium 'P.J. Kate' or P.J. Kate Geranium.  When Pals Alison (Bonnie Lassie) and Emily (All Things Emily) and I toured four gardens in Bellevue, we naturally decided to stop by a couple of nurseries.  This gem was found at Wells Medina Nursery that afternoon.  Geraniums with patterned leaves are favorites of mine and this one is quite unusual in that it has green white and a hint of coral pink in the leaf.

While I usually prefer strong, deeply saturated colors, this delicate colored foliage is cool.

The big surprise?  The pink in the foliage matches the flower color.

There was no information about this plant online so we'll have to make do with the label description: "This lovely geranium has wonderful bright colors in the leaf of green, white and a hint of coral pink. Single coral pink flowers compliment the foliage nicely. Needs some shade."

These will be planted in a large pot that can be enjoyed outside during the summer and hauled into the greenhouse to bloom all winter.
Do you like/grow geraniums?  What do you think of this new one?

  1. Love the foliage -- I wish geraniums would not bloom! I'd also like to see these leaves 12" across!

    1. I love them, blooms and all but I agree that 12" leaves like this would be way cool!

  3. What I like most about Pelargonium is the scent I smell when I rub the leafs. This tri color verity is very unique.

    1. That smell is wonderful, isn't it? I also keep a few scented geraniums around too.

    1. I hand't thought of that but you're right, it does look like tie dye!

  5. It's a beauty. I let my zonal geranium planting lapse. Must you continue to expose my failings?

  6. Beautiful. It reminds me of P. 'Mrs. Pollock' but the colors of this one are more delicate.

    1. There is a resemblance. 'Mrs. Pollock' is a beauty and I usually have a pot or two of that one kicking around but not this year. Got sidetracked by P. 'Indian Dunes.'

  7. This a beautiful Geranium...i like the leaves the best! Geranium are more or less annuals in Houston, they don't like the hot humid summers.

    1. That's really interesting that they don't like your heat. Here we try to give them a sunny and warm location. I've seen Texas Geraniums, they go out in the fall or winter, right?

  8. Geraniums are among my favorite flowers, and I also love variegated foliage, so your P. J. Kate is stunning! It's so cool that the coral in the leaves matches the flowers, too. I'm wondering if it is a candidate for a windowsill geranium that will stay fairly small.

    1. They are sweet and easy plants. Kate is in a fairly generous pot and is more compact than many of the other geraniums. You never know what growth regulators may have been sprinkled on the plants though so it might grow larger. It would be a beautiful windowsill geranium!

    1. I nearly missed it too. They were on the right side of the geranium house, first table as you walk in if you're coming from the main building.

  10. Such a purty geranium! I might just be able to sneak this one past My Pirate. He's in the anti-geranium camp.

  11. Yes, I like Geraniums--wild, straight-species plants and hybrids. I'm picturing this one in a pot, with some ferns or other draping plants surrounding it. Very nice.

    1. Glad you like them! Your idea is wonderful. Now, what color pot? pink to match the leaves and flowers? Delicate aqua to contrast? Terra cotta to blend into the background?

  12. I think geraniums (pelargoniums) stink but this one's a cutie. I really like the foliage.

  14. I would LOVE to have one of these. Will have to check the local nurseries to see if they are available here. The coral on the leaves is beautiful!
