Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

It's Spring, Let's Get Bombed!

Yarn bombed that is.
This is one way to grow flowers in concrete and make a temporary chain link fence look a little more interesting.  It'a also a way that those of you still beneath blankets of snow could enjoy some spring color.
There was previously a building where the space below is.  Now it's just a drop off from the sidewalk to the lot beneath.  Also, beneath the sidewalk are remnants of basement rooms.  Interesting use of below ground space.  By the way, that large white building in the background once was the University Union Club, has been the home of a steak house (still has a commercial kitchen) and is a way cool old  building  that wouldn't require a ton of work.  Did I mention that there's a downstairs ballroom?   With the McMenamins opening later this year  not far from here, this would be a great location for a complimentary business of some sort.
Since the building was removed quite a while ago, this fence assembly has taken up part of the street to allow pedestrians to safely pass without falling off the cliff.
The yarn flowers are fun but I wonder if something will be rebuilt on the now vacant lot.
A longer view.  Do those rectangles on the outside remind you of Tebetan prayer flags or of  Grandma's pot holder drawer?
Just in case you've missed the news lately or have yet to see signs of the changing season, this knitted sign is close to the entrance to let you know that it's SPRING!
Across the street these giant Foo Dogs look somewhat amused by the yarn bombers' work.  Don't worry, these guys are appropriately behind bars.  Although, it looks as if some sort of escape was attempted.
Just to be on the safe side it's most likely best not to taunt them or try to give them treats!

  1. Those fence flowers are fabulous! I just hope that when they cease to be somebody takes them down. Months ago I blogged about a bright green stem and leaves that made a stop sign into a flower, well lets just say winter wasn't kind and nobody is taking it down...

    1. There was something up on the fence during the holidays which was taken down before this went up so I'm thinking that they'll probably remove this for a summer something. Rotting yarn bombing doesn't sound appealing.

  2. That old University Union Club is such a neat old building! I hope someone does something good with it. I wish I loved yarn bombing more. It should appeal to me, but...it doesn't.

    1. I was lucky enough to see the inside of the Union Club building. It's in great shape and there is lots of furniture in the basement from various eras of operation. Way cool.

  3. Hmmm, chain link fence is a difficult eyesore to cover up isn't it? I wish cities used it less and spent more effort fixing things up.

    1. Fortunately this probably won't be there for too much longer. Chain link seems to go with urban renewal though.

  4. Very nice, da bomb (do they even say that anymore?) Looks like a group effort since there are several styles and that would help with the time it takes to do all that work.

Nice thing to fix up the boring fence for a while.

    1. I think they still say da bomb. It'll be nice to see the fence go away but while it's there the distractions are fun.

  5. Alison, I love them enough for both of us. Whimsey always gets me where I live, but I might feel differently if I had to watch it rot in place over time.

  7. I like the yarn bombs! I think they are creative and fun. City beautification bureaucracy meetings can go on forever. Maybe they knitted these during the meetings! You live in such a fun place.

  10. Yam bombing? I was hoping for something edible, preferably mashed with a lot of butter and a dash of orange juice.
