Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

In A Vase On Monday - From Heronswood With Love

The addictive meme, In a Vase on Monday, a weekly opportunity to gather contents for containers from our gardens or nearby to enjoy inside during the week, is hosted by Cathy at Rambling in the Garden.

On Saturday, my pal Alison and I attended the fall plant sale (the final sale of 2017) and thirtieth birthday celebration at Heronswood. For the event, none other than Dan Hinkley himself created an arrangement to grace the cupcake table.  Can you imagine having a seven-acre botanical wonder as a cutting garden? Dan's arrangement was stunning so I'm sharing it today.

Sarracenia "pitchers" punctuate the celebration  of the bounty of late summer's garden.

Beautiful from all angles!

Happy birthday to Heronswood, which is once again blossoming under the care of the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe and the garden's original creator, Dan Hinkley.
Ramble over to Cathy's blog to see what others are putting in a vase this week.

  1. Those of us who ordered from the old Heronswood and knew of the garden (even if we had not visited) are all so happy to know that it is being cared for once again. Went to a wedding Saturday afternoon where the guys had a gorgeous array of cupcakes with champagne in their garden after the ceremony. A cupcake kind of weekend it would seem.

  2. I'm glad Dan returned to oversee Heronswood as I had heard that it was declining without him. It takes dedication to handle such a large nursery and garden. Perhaps he can set up a system that will be able to operate without his close oversight.
Love the arrangement with the pitcher plants and those cupcakes sure look tempting!

  3. That was a very nice arrangement, and so convenient for you to be able to use it for your IaVoM post! Also, it was a fun day being with you!

  4. Oh, I would like to have that flower arrangement also to my next birthday. Unfortunately 30 is over.

  5. What a great tableau - the cakes really seem part of the arrangement, and far grander than any of the props I have produced for IAVOM!

  6. What a fabulous arrangement! I love Sarracenias, and cupcakes. Cutting flowers or plants for arrangements is a tricky topic at my house. Some family members feel that they should never be cut and belong outside, other feel that cut flowers are food (that would be the cat) and still other, are big fans of a flower arrangement.

  7. A wonderful array of plants and cakes too. I've yet to produce an arrangement which looks good all round.

  8. What a celebration ....how lucky you are to have attended....7-acres of flowers to be able to use for vases is a dream.

  9. The floral arrangement is a happy and free-spirited concoction (and as it's lunch time, the cupcakes are looking pretty good to me too). I'm hoping you'll be sharing more photos of your Heronswood visit.

  11. Wow, that arrangement is ... incredible! I guess I've seen Sarracenias in arrangements before, but he's taken it to a whole new level! Wow! It's truly inspiring! I don't know if it encourages me to get back to floral arranging for the fun of it, or to just give up because this is just so over-the-top amazing! LOL.

  13. Sarracenia "pitchers" and Hydrangea in the same arrangement, who would have thought it?
