Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Don't Try This at Home!

Do you ever wax nostalgic about the family driving vacation, stopping by every roadside attraction and staying in quaint motels along the side of the highway?  Perhaps some of these Alaska roadside attractions will help.

Had to stop by Miller's for "The Best Ice Cream In Alaska!"

Some things are just not meant to go together.

On to Gorilla Fireworks.  The gorilla-suited dancer who usually appears on the platform above this groovy van was on a break.  You'll have to visit yourself sometime to see him perform!

More interesting yard art.

Because one location simply isn't enough...

Let's see, who has a VW bug?  Hmm.

And where do they store all of those fireworks?

Now, you kids quiet down back there or I will STOP THIS CAR!

  2. The last fireworks storage is very Keith Haring.
I wonder what kind of attention I'll get driving down the street in the batmobile...

    1. You'd look great in the batmobile! Hope you have the costume to go with it!

  3. The proliferation of fireworks was just due to the time of the year you visited, right? I mean this isn't a year 'round thing is it?

    1. Like here it's there for the fourth of July but they're even more popular for new years eve when it actually gets dark and the fireworks are more impressive.

  4. I think it was John Saladino writing in House Beautiful who said, 40 years ago, "I pray daily that people with taste get money and people with money get taste."

  6. Ice cream fountains- one of those things that can not be unseen... But I do like all the bright colored trailers and containers, they must stand out in the snow! I take it people with bizarre senses of humor gravitate to Alaska.

  7. Hooray for kitsch! It has nearly been gentrified out of existence around here.

    1. The rugged individuals who live in Alaska will never let that happen!

  8. I understand the local focus on moose but what's the fascination with gorillas? Or the link to fireworks for that matter?
