Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Water, Water Everywhere; Todd's Nursery part two

Today we're back at Todd's Nursery in Puyallup and also back in October.  Hope you enjoy a little more time travel.  Todd's not only has a lot of great plants, they also have many water features.

I think that waterfalls should fall into ponds.  This is beautiful but somehow I feel cheated when the water disappears.

This seems more resolved and restful to me.  Call me crazy, you won't be the first.

Todd's does water feature design and installation and has lots of unusual pieces for sale like this stone fountain with carved roses.
I'm a big fan of basalt column fountains with water that disappears beneath the gravel and also like the effect of a huge glazed pot doing the same thing.

Love this rock fish bowl!

What landscape is complete without a water- vomiting dragon?  Or is that a sea monster?
Speaking of sea monsters, Todd's also has a nice selection of Koi.  I'm hearing the theme from Jaws...
Don't be fooled, they're coming for you!  The guy on the right is yelling at all the others to gang up.
The waters rage and foam.  Run while you have the cahnce to get away!
No!  Don't listen to their seductive song.  Turn away from the water!
You have been warned!
Looks like today's snack will be-
YOU!  BWAHAHA!

Seriously though, I always feel so sorry for fish (these were in big tanks for sale, not in one of the ponds) when they seem this hungry.  They are clearly healthy, their water looks great and I've read that it's better to underfeed fish but is this desperate-looking behavior normal?  Have they learned to do this because when they do, they get fed?
I'm usually looking to find the food  because I have the urge to feed the poor little things.

You wouldn't want to go with me to the pound as we'd all leave with carloads of pets.

Anyway, Todd's Nursery is a wonderful place and definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!

  1. Nice to see some Koi at Todd's and on your blog :) Koi would love to get some food at any opportunity it could but most likely those fishes are on the underfed side, so when someone buys them they won't produce that much waste in the bag that can poison them on transit. But once in their permanent home should be fed adequately.

Ahhwww, aren't they all cute?? :)

    1. I love them. Mine never act this way probably because I feed them too much. Koi are such fun pets! Can't wait to see your new pond full of them!

  2. You're not alone (nor crazy) I also prefer to see the water pool up, when it disappears it feels like its being wasted, even though it probably is fed back up to spout again. Your pictures are the one reason I don't like Koi, they always look at the point of desperation, all those gaping mouths, they're not hungry, or rather, they're ALWAYS hungry! I have goldfish instead, they're a little less dramatic about being always hungry.

    1. My koi are always pretty calm but they do swim out to meet me when I walk by the pond. I can see the pond from my kitchen window so even when the weather is yucky outside, they entertain me with their bright colors and silly antics.

  3. Call me crazy but fish acting like that all the time would give me the creeps. Guess it's best I stick with fountains and birdbaths as restful sources of water in the garden :).

    1. Not all children, oops, I mean koi act like that in public. It's just a matter of parenting or in this case, feeding. My overfed darlings are very mellow and watching them is quite restful.

    1. They are beautiful and I enjoy seeing them. These seemed especially hungry though.

  5. To me those koi look like they're singing, like an operatic chorus made up of fish.

    1. They are very fond of warmng up as I heard a lot of scales. Then they sang quite a few tunes like A Dream Is a Fish Your Carp Makes, Gill of My Dreams, Let me Call You Sweet Carp, and Roe, Roe, Roe Your Boat. They fnished with a couple of holiday favorites Carp! The Herald Angels Sing and Koi to the World.

Say, what bit of fish doesn't make any sense? The piece of cod that passeth all understanding.

I'm here all week. Please tip your waitress.

  6. If Alfred Hitchcock had seen those fish, who knows what nightmares he could have wrought.

  7. A fun visit to Todd's no matter when it actually was. The fish are funny, they don't act like that in the park lily ponds where they have plenty of room.

Disappearing waterfall is almost as creepy as the fish.

I've been having a problem with my comments on your blog going through the last couple of weeks.

    1. I think that in the park and in my garden, they have lots of mosquito larve to eat in addition to the food we throw in.

Sorry about your comments not going through Shirley. I don't have any comment moderation or approval thing in place so I'm not sure what the problem would be. Is anyone else out there having trouble?

  9. I love the stones and water, especially in my pond. The stone bowl with fishes is awesome! 'Poor' koi aren't poor, I'm sure they have been fed.
